I have 2 unidentified banana plants I have reason to suspect might have come from the Vietnam region.
they kind of look alike but one has a lot more red on the base of the petiols than the other. one thing I like about them is the leaves droop much like an umbrella around the plant. also the leaves look like an African shield, long and oval.
both are very, very cold hardy.
the reason to suspect is, one of the people I received a couple of plants from said the taste reminded him of the bananas he ate in veitnam. the other, the man has passed away but I know he was stationed in Hawaii.

There are many varieties from that region, but even so, I don’t think the evidence you state really narrows it down at all, many of the cutlivars found there are also found all over SE Asia, and unless someone has had many different types of bananas, took detailed notes, and knew exactly what type it is they were tasting, I wouldn’t give weight to that opinion. Everyone experiences taste differently, and it’s really not a very useful trait for IDing anyway.
To even attempt an ID, we’re going to need to see photos of the plants, and preferably fruit bunches on the plants.

basically I am just looking for some names to play with. our service men move all over the world so yes not a good way to id.
