I am in South central Louisiana, and we are getting a cold snap through Tues. Frost warnings are out for tonight, and maybe tomorrow night. It is not a freeze, but could get close tonight. We put some chicken fencing around the plant, loose leaves, cut banana leaves, and some commercial mulch in it about 2 ft deep. I have 2 pups, and 1 sucker on it. Should I wait until the leaves are brown before cutting down to a couple feet. It is supposed to be an ice cream banana, but I don't really know what it is. It is handling overnight lows of 50 degrees fine. Thanks :)

After consideration of a few techniques for winterizing, we decided to do the cut. There were 3 pups on, but because it had already stopped pushing, leaves, we left them on. I chose to surround the plants with fencing, a little commercial mulch, leaves, and the cuttings from the entire plant. There is some plastic of the top with slivers of the base to hold it down. I was very careful to allow airflow underneath. This is my first banana plant and it was very young. Now we wait for spring. My neighbors all have various varieties of banana plants, and they just cut them down....that's it. I am not sure what they sold me at the plant store (ice cream), so I am looking forward to find out when it flowers.

I was told I need to overlap the plastic, so going to do that today. You guys are so helpful. Glad I found this place :woohoonaner:::woohoonaner::woohoonaner:
