How fast do they grow? I have a dwarf red in a 20gal container. It's been about 3-1/2 feet tall for about a year, has three small ups, and everything looks great with the plant. No yellow, no mush, not wilting, and no distorted leaves. Does anyone have a clue?
Thanks for any input.

By "not growing" you mean that it hasn't put out a new leaf in a year?

I apologize. I was typing in a rush.
Not growing anywhere near as fast as my other banana plants. It's 3/4 the way to the deployment of a new leaf, and it's been working on this leaf for about two and a half weeks. Usually it's only a few days per leaf with the other types.

Dwarf red grows very slow for me. Probably the slowest out of all the varieties I grow.

Mine reach size and get thicker/wider.
Pstem height seems to be 4+- ft with nice thick foiliage
The plants are in 12-18 gal containers and are somewhat prolithic.
The plant has a large squat footprint and could be a great feature plant around a pool.
They are fed regular garden fertilizer like triple16 or miracle grow.
These plants for me are the some of the first plants to decline once short days and cool weather sets in but my Bordelons are still quicker.
The plant is a robust beast.
Here is a link to a few of mine.

Ok, upon seeing your first picture, I am thinking that I might have a problem. I’ll post pictures as soon as I can. My plant’s leaves are stacked up quite densely. .Otherwise, All look perfectly healthy. I was assuming the dense stacking of leaves was the dwarfism. I have some “double mahoi” plants that are densely stacked in the same manner (with no other visual problems). Your pictures make me think that my “tall red” plant might be a dwarf as well. We’ll see?

These fellas are short and stout....with a big footprint.
I have a few coming off loans....the plant is a short beast.
I do not think you have an issue with your plant.
Leaves seem to"stack" tighter in a container....however in the ground they will stack further apart and spread out more.
The plant is a beast..
Just my op....love the plant .

It might be weather dependent. On my Dwarf Red the leaves are stacked right on top of each other and it is in the ground.

My “mahoi” banana plants were in the ground and had the leaves stacked just like the Red. So, I don’t know. I’ll keep an eye on it. It’s just growing really slow. I’ll try to get a picture tonight.

from what I have read its to cold for bunchy top here.
sometimes they come out of it, sometimes they don't.
kinda thinkin its either heat stress or lack of rain or both. believe its stress related.

I guess mine is kind of in between in growth form. Mine definitely doesn't look like it has Bunchy Top. Here is a picture.

looks fairly normal to me. from what I can glean off the bunchy top subject it pretty much doesn't exist in the mainland US. the virus cant deal with the cold.
and what we are experiencing is lack of water or a fertilization problem, lack of.

For me the plant will grow tight.
Just as tight as many dwarf plants that I grow.
Short petiole
The plant does have a big foot print if you want to overwinter under lights.
This is zone 5/6 talking .....results will vary for y'all southerners.
I can only grow this plant for 180 days a year.....the rest is downtime.
You guys have some good looking plants.

Here's my dwarf red. The pruning was from my preparations for Hurricane Dorian. Since April it has only added about 4 or 5 of those leaves. The newest leaf has taken about two weeks to unfurl. It looks about the same as Best Day's.

This is a "Red Banana" that I got from a person on eBay. I'm really not sure if it is a tall, since seeing Cincinnana's Dwarves.

Maybe it is just the winter cycle of North FL that stresses it? I keep them potted so I can bring them into my small hoop house.

yours looks fine also especially being in pots....:nanadrink: wish I could do pics, don't believe bananas.org likes me anymore.
got a friend I gave one too, 7 ft. the last I seen. its in ground but they build a mini green house around it each winter. now if I have her convinced about not moving it around anymore.?
I know they are not very cold hardy. but I had a couple survive last winter and now they don't do anything but sit there.

Well, then I should probably just be happy that mine is putting out a few leaves:ha:
I fertilize this weekend. So, I’ll see if it takes off in the next month.

Hi Bill
If your dwarf red leaves are stacked on top of each other, it means they require warmer temperatures. All AAA varieties do that for me, if i plant them outside in our cool UK summers, as soon as i put them into the greenhouse, the problem is resolved, no more stacked leaves.

That makes sense. I’m only two miles from the beach in Southern California. So my summers are mild. The plant grows fine but it is one of my slowest growers.

I decided to pull the two largest pups off of this plant today. It turns out that about half of the roots had nematode damage. I am assuming that it was from last winter, when I had the pot laying directly on the soil in my hoop-house. The yard in our last rental had a very mushy, wet, yard. Nematodes probably crawled up through the holes that I drilled in the bottom of the pot. I usually have them sitting on two 12" 2x4's so that they are up high. Luckily, my other plant were up on wood during that time, and they are all still growing fine.
I pulled all of the Reds out of that pot, and treated the corms with very hot bleach water dips. I pruned the roots before that as well. I'd say that the main corm's roots had an infection rate of 25%.
That pot will probably be filled with French Marigolds. Nematodes hate them, and it will help starve the next generation of Nematodes once they hatch.

I bought a dwarf red tissue culture less than a year ago and it is now around 6ft tall. The P stem is dark red. Like a lot more red than other trees pictured in this thread. It is growing at a decent rate but still slower than most others I have.

Thanks they are nice looking for sure. It is really warm here. 15 miles inland 1200ft. I think the sweet spot for most stuff is 5-10 miles inland. We are kind of on the edges of what is too mild and too warm.
