Second bloom!!!! Hoping for the best with the hurricane. I am excited about this one because the trunk in thicker than the other one, and should make a bigger bunch...… is that true? I noticed (not with the other one) that the flag leaf was kind of red. I think it's an icecream…….. will keep you updated. :ha:

I think so. I got blooms last year mid September and I was able to harvest something in my zone. The bananas were not maximum size. About 80% but after two weeks they turned yellow and were edible. I pruned 50% of the bananas and bagged the bunches to help with overnight temps.

Thanks! Do your bananas have any particular flavors? Like apple bananas obviously have an apple taste...….. Icecream bananas have a vanilla taste...…. So more like Namcream bananas or Icewa bananas?!?!??!!!

Mine are very sweet. Like a very sweet banana. I froze a couple dozen and then blended them up with a bit of cream. Tasted like banana ice cream. Daughter suggested adding some vanila to the next batch.
I harvested four bananas from a plant at my Mother's house recently and although fat and huge with a nice internal consistency they were not sweet or particularly flavorful. I was very disapointed based on the size and maturity of the bananas themselves. The plant was very small (7') so maybe that impacted the quality of the bananas.
Hope you have a good one!

Akula, I'm just wondering, did it hurt your pride to cut of 50% of the bananas? Cuz, I don't think I can do it.....

Its one of those sad things that a person needs to do but will try to avoid if possible so you need to focus on the glass is half full side of the equation!
Nick Naranja who grows commercially in a great area near West Palm Beach believes eight hands is the ideal number to maximize Namwa finger size. My namwa bunches are between 16 - 20 hands so cutting off half of the hands leaves me with quite a few nanners at a better averaqe finger size. Especially so taking into account my location, zone, and approaching winter temps.

Hey Backyard,
It was a July flower so I'm going to let it run. I got another Namwa flower at the end of August that had 17 hands which I pruned off six hands from earlier this week. Probably should have pruned nine hands but it is in a good location.

100% for sure Musa Tall Namwa. (Pisang Awak) ABB
I always try to prune anything blooming September and later! It will fill the remaining hands faster! Get a BIG latter! Lol
Musa namwa taste like sweet sweet sweet amazing bananas! No ice cream or vanilla flavor.
Musa blue java taste like sweet milder bananas with no taste of ice cream or vanilla.
Musa Brazilian (HI apple) doesn’t taste like apples either! Lmao
Who named these bananas?
Does everyone agree?

My guess is 12 hands... 12 hands (heynow)!!!!!! 12 hands, over 215 bananas!!!!! How many hands would you recommend thinning?
Akula
09-13-2019, 10:40 PM
Under summer conditions in Florida with plenty of water I believe a healthy Namwa will fill out in 4 months. Your plant thinks it has four months to mature 12 hands of bananas. In reality it probably has two months plus maybe another month with luck and protection of the bunch by bagging. I would prune 4-6 hands with lower end taking into account a strong healthy plant with a minimum of 12 leaves that gets a ton of sun during the day.
Check my thread from 2018 to see how mine developed last year with pics before and after pruning:

The deed is done! I will be honest with you, I felt like I was going to throw up when I severed the baby bananas connection from the plant. Akula may or may not know how I felt, and do feel. partly against Akula's suggestion, I only removed 3 hands, due to the fact that I MIGHT, might, be a little south of him, thus not having AS MUCH winter, but mostly due to the fact that I am a stubborn person. :08: :ha: :ha: :ha: :08: Pics: before thinning

Update! The bananas are just starting to plump and take shape! Question: why are the several week old bananas just as plump as the 2 month old bananas? (I know they are different varieties, but they all get just as plump in the end) Pics:

Looks like that tough luck will cost me my bunch. Son of an idiot neighbor harvested the bunch last night. Technically it was on his side by mabye two feet. Crazy person thought we started A SINK HOLE on his side by digging a banana pit he said we could dig, but later telling us, “ get that piece of sh*t of my side. I think you can tell I am angry🙂. I am crying right now.

Why are you planting stuff off your property if you have a person next door? dig up the pups and move them on your property if you wanna stop the madness.

Good advice HMelendez! We only have about three and a half feet on the side yard, so thought mabye I could squeeze in some bananas over there, as my yard is not as big as I wish it was. On the remaining plants over there (two different corms) I will dig all pups that will throw a bunch on the other side. With the parent, I did my best, but somehow mixed up which side was which, and planted so it would go over the fence.
Actually moving the fence at night would not work as that is when he is doing mischief!!!!! Broad daylight would actually be better!!!!! kind of an owl in crankiness and sleeping hours!!!!!!

Wow. I usualy share as much fruit as possible with my neighbors because the fruit ripens so fast. Hard to eat 250+ bananas in a week! This last bunch we gave away fruit, ate as much as possible, froze a bunch, and then made banana bread.
Most of my bunches to date have fallen to the South or to the West. Basically to the side the plant leans towards the sun.

if you have a plant leaning that way again throw a strap around it and stake it or tie it to something in the opposite direction. You could get it to straighten up over a couple weeks of gradually more and more pressure on the strap.
side note: if the plants belong to you so do the fruits even if they hang over some, the law would be on your side in FL

I had a rope Incased in some old hose where the rope pulls against the trunk. The plant was pretty much 95% upright.
Good to know about the law!

Anyhow, the left side of the fence is my side, and the right his side. you can see how the bunch barely went over the fence. the bananas are in fair condition after falling 11 feet from the tree (when he cut them with a pole saw or saw with ladder), then 6 or 7 feet over the fence. Bro i guess i can harvst my own bananas!!!! He also ha back problems and knee problems. why mess with my bananas? the whole time we have lived here (15 years) he has been pranking me. such as putting a lock on our sprinkler box, and putting off fireworks on our property. MOVE AWAY!!!!!!!! :ha::ha::ha::ha::ha::ha::ha::ha::ha::ha::ha::ha:

good time to start relocating that variety. maybe a dwarf something over there that way the leaves won't be so long of an overhang.

Congratulations! Looking good.
Everything looks like a Namwa to me because that's about all I've got and lots of them! I just finished my latest bunch two days ago or I would cut one open to check what it looks like inside. I have one bunch left hanging. Its about 2/3 filled but I'm gonna take it down in a week and see what happens. The flesh color of my namwas has varied from creamy white to having a bit of orange coloring inside. They go ripe really quick once they turn yellow and I don't really like them yellow/green. Gotta be yellow. I've got plenty of pics in my photo gallery to help you confirm.
Happy New Year!
