Hello All,

I'm new to the group and seeking out some advice on the Musa Blue Java Banana. I hope this is the correct place to post this question.

I am new to the world of bananas so I have been doing some research on the Blue Java. I came across the wikipedia article that stated that the Blue Java is a triploid hybrid. From what I know, organisms that are triplod in nature are barren, much like how mules are. This is also how we get fruits that are "seedless."

Assuming that my information is correct, Musa Blue Java Banana fruit shouldn't have any seeds or would have seeds that probably wouldn't germinate. Does this mean people who are selling Musa Blue Java Banana Seeds are not legit?

I wanted to buy some seeds and found this ebay site. I'm just not sure if it's legit. If seeds are viable, does anybody know where I can get some seeds from a reputable place?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/SEEDS-EXTREMELY-RARE-Semi-Dwarf-Blue-Java-or-named-Ice-Cream-Banana-Zone-8-/263233384383

Thank you in advance for any advice.

I'd be very skeptical. I've never heard of a dwarf or semi dwarf Blue Java. The regular Ice cream banana is one of the few I've been able to harvest ripe fruit from and they definitely don't have seeds.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply and sharing your experience.

Did you mean you have never heard of Blue Java in general or you've never heard of a Dwarf Blue Java?

From my understanding, I could be totally wrong, the Blue Java is the same as the Ice Cream Banana. Are there other types of Ice Cream Bananas?

Also, since you had the opportunity to harvest the ripe fruit, were you able to taste it as well?

Thanks

Most I believe your are correct. ... My Blue Java did not have seeds. Banana plants go by different names as well as 'local' names. So the 'ice cream' and Blue Java bananas that have seeds are not the same.

Would you know of a reputable place where I could get "Ice Cream Bananas" and/or "Blue Java Bananas"?

How's the taste of your Blue Java? Where did you get your plant?

Watch for forum members that have Blue Java pups for trade or sell. Be weary of TC Ice cream and Blue java from the online Florida nurseries. These are from Agristarts and known to be Namwah. My Blue Java came from a south Florida grower.

Blue Java and Ice cream are one and the same. I've never heard of a dwarf variety of this cultivar.

Thanks Bob. I think they are the same too because when you look it up, both of them comes out and people seem to use them interchangeably.

Ya the eBay one I think is also not legit. I same the same add on Amazon with same description and pictures but has a really bad reviews.

Thanks for your input.

I heard other people on this forum also say to avoid Namwah. What is it and why do people not recommend it?

There are several other varieties of banana plant that are referred to a 'ice cream' ... Even an Orinoco sub variety, a Namwah sub variety and other Asian banana varieties. This is part of the confusion of the "Ice Cream" banana is the use of a local nick names. ... But which ones have good vanilla flavor I don't know. A most of these are called 'ice cream' due to the creamy nature of the nana rather than its flavor.

I don't know that anyone has said to avoid Namwah. I think they may have said to make sure that someone doesn't sell you Namwah, *if you want Blue Java/Ice Cream*. Namwah is highly regarded in Thailand, where they know a thing or two about bananas. I have a bunch of bananas that were *supposed to be* Blue Java/Ice Cream, but I've been told that they were Namwah. I should be able to harvest them soon and then I'll know for sure which they are. Either way, I should get to find out how they taste. I expect that even if they are Namwah they will taste great!

Well not exactly ... The Namwah is not a Blue Java 'ice cream' which it is being sold as. I think this was due to a lab mix up of TC plantlets and/or nursery shipping mix up (some deliberate; some accidental) However, most everyone that grows the Namwah rated its nana as being better than the Blue Java in texture & flavor. ... I have both in my nana patch and hope to one day being able to taste both nanas side-by-side.

What we warn about is the miss-labeled TC plantlets by Agristarts that are sold as Blue Java ice cream. They are Namwah.

There is a lot of controversy in regards to Namwah. Ice Cream, Blue Java, They are 2 different bananas. Most Ice Cream are Namwah and have a very creamy sweet taste and are.prefered over Blue Java which can be somewhat starchy and not as sweet.
I grow both and have multiple Blue Java fruiting as we.speak. It is a beautiful plant and to be honest I like my bananas not so sweet.
Both of mine were acquired from verified org members and as stated above by many are sold on here from time.to time so watch the.forum

Most people who have tried both prefer the Namwah.
If you have room, grow both!

Happy growing,
Darla

Hello Everybody,

Thanks so much for all the information. There are a lot of it to digest. I didn't think there would be so much information about bananas let alone a forum dedicated to it.

I appreciate everyone's input. Thanks for all the clarification. I will definitely keep an eye on the forum.

Is growing from seeds even viable? Do people on here even sell them? I haven't read through the whole forum but it seems like most people acquire their nanas from TC or pups?

Musa blue java is rare.

If you buy a Musa “ice cream” 99% of the time you are buying a Musa tall namwa. The words “Ice cream” shouldn’t even be used and isn’t used by reputable sellers. The words “ice cream” is just used to sell the plants! And to sell them for more $$.

Neither blue java or namwa have vanilla flavor! They are creamy in texture though. Both can be excellent! In my trials here the real blue java is more cold hardy!

Seeded bananas are like gravel inside a banana peel. There is usually little to no actual pulp. All rock hard seeds! Always remember if you plant a banana seed, that plant is going to produce seeded bananas!

I have eaten sweet and tasty bananas with a creamy texture that carried occasional little tiny seeds inside.
Sometimes I can buy them here at the chinese store named as namwah.

Not too long ago I was lucky enough to germinate one of those seeds that I collected from this typ of banana.
Still there is no chance to get enough seeds to sell them on ebay unless you eat hundreds of them. Lol
