Why do you say "something else"?

Because theres apparently a "florida" variegated that looks like aeae but isnt. I havent seen a side by side comparison and am not able to tell the difference.

Hard to tell from the picture. Musa Florida has more of an erect leaf growth habit. While AEAE has more of a dropping leaf growth habit. If you could take a pic from the side I could ID it.

From that photo it looks like Florida to me.

Other than the "droop", are there other differences? Size, fruit, reliability of variegation, etc.? First time I have heard of the Florida - everyone seems to talk about the AeAe - but if they are basically the same, why so little interest in the Florida?

As the plant gets larger it is a lot easier to tell the difference. PR Giant has posted some pictures and diagrams showing how to tell the difference between the two. Try to find those they are very helpful.

The way the variegation looks is different. Gabe could probably give you a better answer, but in general the pattern of the streaks doesn't look the same.

Is this one a real aeae? Fruit shape looks right.

The guy in the photo is a seller on etsy by the way. He is selling the pups as aeae and has a few for sale now on etsy.

That fruit is definitely AeAe not Florida.

That fruit looks right; it is rounded on the end. The variegated one from Florida has fruit that is more pointed on the end.

The Ae Ae is, I believe, a variegated Maoli type banana, and the fruit should look identical except for the variegation.

I believe the Florida variegated banana was due to irradiating the plant to cause the variegation, and the Hawaiian Ae Ae was a natural variegation, but I could be wrong about that.

I've grown the Ae Ae, so I've seen it up close from pup to fruit, but I haven't see the Florida except through photos. The variegation on the Florida type appears to me to be different, but it would be difficult to explain why.
