View Full Version : when to separate pups?
This must be a FAQ but search isn't helping me today... I bought a pup and got three :08: -- when do I separate them? See photos below (these are a bit over a week old, all the plants are a bit bigger now...)

Thanks for the photo - nice healthy plant.
What are the dimentions of the plant container?
Do you know what type of banana it is?
The plant is a Cal Gold and is in a deep 4" square pot. Everything has grow quite a bit since the last photo:

Looks to me like I should separate these three... ?

Looks to be a cavendish type. Most likely a dwarf cavendish.
I would pot them all into a larger pot and allow the pups to get a little larger. You would get a better success rate and it would be easier to cut them.
Where did you get the plant from?
The true Cali gold is a dwarf Orinoco type. Honestly the dwarf Orinoco is just as good!

I wouldn't separate those at all. Transplant to the ground, then separate when the pups are 2 to 3 ft tall and the corn has had time to grow. ... Basically I wouldn't separate them even then.
Oops, the bananas needed repotting a few days ago so I did that before seeing replies and I separated one pup off into its own pot. I figured that since I have two pups might as well make a little experiment :drum:
So far, two days later, the pup is still alive in its own 4" pot. The larger one with pup attached is in a #2 pot. It's going to be interesting (for me at least) to watch...

Uhh, oh... :0491: the plant is from GreenEarth. I ordered before reading comments here... Since then, I got 11 'naners from a local forum member, talk about bonanza! :birthdaynana: (Rajapuri, Dw. Brazilian, Dw. Namwah, and Pisang Ceylon). I think that instead of pursuing a true Dw. Orinoco I should focus my energy on making what I got grow :choochoo:
