Hi,

I just received a Dwarf Cavendish Banana Plant last week. One of the leaves was already yellowing upon delivery and another smaller side leave looked as if it was already dying. I have been making sure to only water when necessary and have been checking the soil. Less than a week later, the plant looks as if it is growing, and i see a new leaf starting to grow, but the other two look as if they are dead or dying? Can someone advise me on what may be going on, and as to whether or not i need to prune these off? I have attached pictures.

I am new to growing bananas and hope that this tree will grow, be healthy, and possibly even bear fruit! I will be only growing this in a pot, and it will always stay inside.

Thanks!

I don't have much experience growing in pots but from what I have read and seen on this website the conditions you are seeing are due to overwatering 9 times out of 10. Very common problem. Especially with small plants with limited root structure in cooler temps i.e. room temps. Cut off the leaves if no green is remaining.

Is it a dwarf or a super dwarf? …. If it's a dwarf growing it in a pot it's whole life isn't a great idea. It will still get 7' tall at least. For now it's fine. Baby bananas lose their earliest leaves quickly so wait till it totally dies and cut it off with scissors.

i have it in a very large pot in anticipation of it growing around that size. it is just a dwarf. I have it in my main entrance way in my home, which has a very very high ceiling, and will receive plenty of sun.

If this is normal, i will cut off the little one that is dead, and wait for the other to totally turn brown. At what specific point do i cut, closest to the main stem/stalk?

Thanks!

It's totally normal . That's how they grow. The young leaves die off way quicker than the older ones. Every dead leaf you're closer to a mature fruiting plant.

Same here my friend, I just got a few bananas for the first time in years and figured I would check out what was going on here these days.

So i cut off the completely dead leaf today, will continue to monitor progress. Also bought a moisture meter, so i wont be too off on over/under watering.

Also, i noticed many of these bugs in the soil. This plant has never been outside. I bought bagged ORGANIC potted soil for this plant. Are these spider mites? Should i be concerned? i dont see any on the topside or underside, just the soil. Please see pic below. They are very tiny, and are hard to photograph.
