This is getting worrying.
I'm in the UK (yes, that in itself is worrying, I know, but I didn't mean that), and it seems Europe is suffering a serious shortage of banana plant availability.
The usual ones are available, Basjoo, Maurellii and Lasiocarpa, if in slightly less abundant quantities, but the less mainstream ones are in seriously short supply.
Hopefully we are about to experience a tidal wave of young Musas crashing into our nurseries. Maybe they are waiting for consistently nice weather, or for millions of them to arrive from wholesalers abroad, but currently I'm reminded of how things were 30-40 years ago when you had to know someone with a mother plant if you wanted one, and even then you barely knew its full name. Either that or you detached one/bought one whilst on holiday in the Mediterranean, and smuggled it through Customs like some sort of despicable plant 'mule', along with your Bougainvillea cuttings.
But we had become comfortable with there usually being reasonable supplies available, and to see the current international shortage has me frightened that we'll all be resorting to roses and fuchsias before too long. Frankly I'd rather eat my own head.
Can anyone throw any light on this situation, and am I just being impatient, negative and over-sensitive?
