This was a cross between a Blue Java Ice Cream Banana and a local wild Raspberry Banana.

We'll be pollinating many of our cultivars with different wild types and should have plenty of extra seeds available for members. If you are interested I'd recommend starting with fruit that you'd like to taste and get the seeds for free. The seeds did not affect the flavor of the bananas and they were easy to find.

Hi I would like to try to grow your experimental banana in Canada. I am planning to take it indoors during the winter months and protect it from beavers during the summer. Thank you! :2781:

I'll post updates as bunches become available. There's a variegated bunch that needs to be checked in the next few days and if it has seeds I'll make an update. Thanks :08:

What is Raspberry Banana?

It's a great tasting local wild banana that has a raspberry flavor.

Thanks for the help.

If you plant the seeds immediately after removing from the fruit (do not let them dry out in storage), there is a chance some will germinate, but the germinate rates are often poor. I normally sprout them in 100% coconut coir in the nursery under 30-50% shade. The potential resulting plants will be totally unknown in their traits until you grow them out, but often there are a number of rather messed up plants that can result due to chromosomal mispairings, mixploidy, or polyploids beyond 4N. Some may be parthenocarpic and fertile, others may be non-parthenocarpic and sterile, and others a range in between.

Many ABBs tend to easily produce seed in the presence of a good fertile pollen source nearby. I have observed it in my research fields commonly among Pisang Awak and Bluggoe types. I have not had spontaneous seed set in any other groups, but I have obtained seed from deliberate pollinations on AAB Pome, various AA, and some tetraploids. Many of the tetraploids are relatively female fertile, so I would be careful with them around wild species as well.

Thanks!

I would like to grow both the crossed one and pure blue java. Can I be hopeful to get the seeds? I would also like to know the cost for the seeds (as it involves lot of effort, knowledge and experience)

I'll post updates as bunches become available. Thanks :08:

It takes about 4 months from pollination to harvest. I randomly check some fingers about a month prior to harvest.

Yesterday I cleaned a large bunch of Variegated Pisang Awak only to find 2 seeds. Both of them were inside the last finger of the distal hand.

Two's better than zero. :ha:

There is a very good chance that our largest bunch ever from a white Pisang Awak will be seeded. The inflorescence bloomed about 5 feet away from a seeded banana blooming during the same time. It has 15 hands and about 300 fingers. :woohoonaner:

We've gotten a bunch a interesting seedlings so far, but many seeds don't germinate or grow properly.

Here's 2 seedlings that seem to be growing well so far.

Is the variegation stable? I think you need to start thinking of a name for your new cultivar.

This is a pisang awak seedling from seeds that I collected out of bananas I have had in the Philippines in February.
There is a bit of varigation in it as well. Unfortunately I dont know what banana was the pollen donor.
What is strange so far is, it made 14 or 15 small leaves until now. None of them was a normal shaped banana leaf. The one that is unrolling now could be the first real leaf.
