I am in need of some help. I am in zone 6 and brought the bananas in for the winter. I have a dwarf green banana that stopped growing and I looked at it yesterday and saw that the center was dead and moldy. Today, I cut the p-stem on the mother plant until there was no more black areas in the center and realized that there was some new growth on the side itself. The pup on the side was also moldy and dead in the center so I cut that down as well. When I peeled away some of the dead leaves, I saw something growing out of the side and not quite the usual location for a pup as it was higher on the p-stem.

Questions that I have:
1. Do I treat the cut p-stem with anything to prevent fungus/infection?
2. Is the side growth off of the pup something that I should allow to keep growing or does that need to be cut back?

Thanks!

Cut it back to where it is growing out the side. It was choked and it has broke though the side, let it grow.

Bananasue,

1. Do I treat the cut p-stem with anything to prevent fungus/infection?

No, don’t do nothing!....As you can see the new growing point (pup/nub) started to develop, to grow already!...

2. Is the side growth off of the pup something that I should allow to keep growing or does that need to be cut back?

Yes, allow to grow it!...Don’t cut it!...That it’s your new growing pup, plant!...Most likely it was choking inside and it sorted out by itself!....As you can see is coming from the inside of the plant!....Most likely the plant with the time will dry up, and the new growing point will take over!....That is going to be your new plant!....

Hopefully it helps!
