I love plantains too. We have a Bravo sprmkt now and you can get all you want. But in the frozen foods section you will find bags of half step plantains - tostones. They fry them once to soften then smash. At home you pop them in hot oil and wha - la! Tostones for dinner. Super convenient and absolutely delicious!!!
Couple of steaks on the Weber grill and a berros salad and you have a great easy to prepare dinner!!!

Hector,
Noticed tape around the bottoms of those containers.
Is the tape to keep the ants out?
Tytaylor77
02-13-2019, 10:12 PM
I think the tape is to keep the pots from exploding due to the plants insanely fast growth!!
Nah it’s to keep the sand in the pot. I go back and forth. I sometimes use tape. Other times use gravel. And often use little patches of peat or coco.
Amazing bro! Such a good job caring for the rare Senorita! I can’t wait to see how this one grows!

Great to see TC seedlings are outside now, they are looking great, just be careful that the small green house is wind proof and you have lots of weight on it , even though I can see you have fastened it to the fence.

Getting back to keeping the sand/soil in the pots --- I have always used plastic winddow screening. Cut strips wide enough to cover the holes and long enough to reach both sides of the pot. Four holes = 2 strips and wallah!

Donald,
Awesome job buddy!......I still use Nanas as mulch!....There's not better mulch than pieces of old Nana plants!.....I just moved all the mulch from the Nanas to the compost bins!....To let decompose faster, quickly!....Also, I'm adding coffee grounds, grass clippings and biochar (very crushed wood charcoal) to the compost bins......Eventually I will cover the Nana mats again with a much better quality mulch!.....

Both Musa Niño Varieties are original from Malaysia and Musa Patupi is original from PNG (Papa New Guinea)....They might look similar, but they are different Musa cultivars....As you stated, Both Niño Varieties and Patupi belongs to the AA Genome Subgroup!....They are fast growers!....But very cold sensitive!.....
Hopefully it helps!....

Morning Hector!
What is your watering policy/routine for your plants potted up in the course sand? How often and how deep do you water them in hot summer and cool winter?
I have very little experience with potted plants Recently I re-potted a few plants with course sand from HD but not sure about watering. I also placed the plants out in the patch under the canopy where they get partial sunlight but am worried the black plastic pots might get too hot.
Thanks for any help or advice.

my name is not hector but I am better looking. :ha:
I do have allot of background with silica sands. you do have to be very careful with water them because they can hold a bunch of water for a very long time till you get about the half of a size of a pea. and still will hold water with allot of fines.....take a pot, put a bit of bed sheet in the bottom fill it with your sand and water. then in a couple of days dump it out and you will see what I mean.

Thank you Beam for providing information about the qualities and characteristics of coarse sand.
Do you have a watering protocol or policy with coarse sand based on your experience for plants outside in pots i.e. watering approximately every three days during the summer triggered by ______ , watering after physical examination of the soil approximately every week, etc.
My experience to date is with outdoor field planted plants in adequately draining soil with high organic matter content covered by mulch. In my area and with my local climate and conditions I water about every two days if it hasn't rained for three days or so. I physically check the soil to see if it is moist at a depth of four inches or so.
Based on all the great photos of Hector's potted plants on this thread I'm trying to tease out his secret! Haha.

Donald,
*****I used pool filter silica coarse sand with perlite mix as medium for Nanas in pots*****
If the Nana plant that have been re-potted or transplanted has roots, then I water them every 2-3 days!.....
If the Nana plant or corm doesn't have any roots. I water them every 6 to 7 days until they grow roots (rooting)!....
Most of the time, I placed any corm or a Nana plant without any roots at my house balcony, out of the rain water, until they grow roots, then, as you, I move them under the bigger Nanas (canopy) where they get partial sunlight....To get them hardy enough, acclimatize, at least for 2 weeks, before transplanting them to the ground!.....
Tease out my secret!.......shhhhhhhh!......LOL!.....:ha:
Hopefully it helps!......

No more birds on the ground or around the Nanas!.....These Owls are very effective!....They have a flap on the back of the head that when the wind hits the flap, the head of the Owl moves around!....
This is my first FHIA-18 Bonanza plant, but you can check our buddy, Nick Naranjas FHIA-18 Bonanza pictures of mature plants, in which some of them are flowering, blooming!.....Check post #1585......http://www.bananas.org/f2/whats-blooming-your-garden-bananas-11555-80.html

Thanks Hector for the link to Nick's FHIA-18 photo.
I'm going to get one of those owls next year to protect my blueberry bushes! It's raided by a pair of cardinals on a regular basis. I call them the "Red Raiders". They really work as a team with one of them on the "lookout" while the other grabs the goods.
Your patupis are coming along. Looking good! Did you fruit the original last year and if so what month? Thanks!
Thanks for the TARS info above!!!

You welcome!....Trust me!...These Owls are very effective!.....No more birds around!.....Also, it's good to move the Owls around, at least once a week!....The mother/main Patupi plant fruited around December last year!....
If you like the taste of a ripe plantain fruit, then you are going to love Patupi!.....That is what Patupi taste to me!....Straight up fruity ripe plantain taste!.....I love plantains, so I love Patupi!....It's one of my favorites!.....

now you take poor little Darla. [do I move to another country? do i change my name to sputniknad?]

Inside the greenhouse. It’s about 8.5’ feet. I had to cut her way back after winter and the move into the greenhouse. Same growth point pushed after awhile but I was thinking she reset. So it was a surprise looking up and seeing the flower!

FHIA-2 Mona Lisa keeps growing nicely!....At the beginning, FHIA-2 Mona Lisa was a slow grower!....Now she is picking up the growing pace!.....She is approaching 4 1/2 ft. tall!....
At the background, you can appreciate the little, tiny FHIA-3 Sweetheart!.....LOL!......With only 40 to 42 inches at the base (circumference)!.....FHIA-3 Sweetheart should be flowering soon!....

Hi Hector,
I was curious about the bed rings you have set up. Is that so you can keep the beds defined and deliver nutrients more effectively? :lurk::2738:

Mushtaq,
Thank you buddy!.....Yes!....I keep info, records, data at least for the first three (3) generations!....Shhhhhhh!......FHIA-3 Sweetheart flower is going to be a little, very tiny flower! (LMAO!......:ha:)......
:2723::bananarow::2723:
I would be interested in seeing a sample of anyone's record layout. I had never considered doing this but I'd like to start keeping more meticulous records across all my plant collections. Hopefully thats not to personal a request :2623::parachutenanner:

RareFruitForester,
As you mentioned, I use the bed rings to deliver the nutrients, irrigation and mulch more effectively!....You can find/buy them at Home Depot......https://www.homedepot.com/p/2-ft-W-x-0-25-in-L-Green-Plastic-Easy-Edging-51034/206449737
As for the Nana info, data, record's they are not hard to make!....As I mentioned, I kept tracking the first three generations of a Nana Variety!....As an example of including info with pictures are P-Stem height/circumference, leaves, petioles, Nana bunch, peduncle, male flowers, etc.....My suggestion is keep taking detail pictures and add notations/notes to them, from when the plant is small until fruit harvest time!.....

Hey Hector! Awesome looking plants!
How old is your patupi? Eight months? Can your provide the height and circumference of the pstem? Looks like its starting to top out/crown. Mine's at six feet and I got my first peeper this week. Hoping its more on the fruits at 6' side of things vs. 8' side per the WIKI. Haha.

She is about eight months approx.......She is 8 ft. tall right now!....Circumference it shouldn't be no more than 24 inches, since Musa Patupi is on the "medium" size of circumference comparing to other Nana Varieties!....
Your are right!.....Good eye buddy!....She's starting to "stack" the leaves before flowering!.....Usually Musa Patupi grows approx. 9 ft. tall before flowering on my growing conditions!.....She should be flowering soon!....Yours might not grow that tall at flowering/blooming given the up north colder conditions!....Let's see!....Congrats on the pup!....She is a heavy pupper, once she gets established!.....
