On my oldest California Gold, the older sheaths are tearing from the top down, which is the opposite of what I normally see. It overwintered in the basement, so would that be the reason, shrinkage? Has anyone else had this problem? Please tell me how it turned out in the end...it would be ashame to have it die or anything from my own ignorance.
I'll get a picture tomorrow, it is almost hard to explain.
Thanks in advance,

That's because the emerging pstem is growing a lot fatter that the exterior sheath, which probably stopped growing when it was in the cold. I don't think that it's anything to be alarmed on. That could be a good sign, as well. If the plant is big enough, that might be where the blossom is.
