Hello I'm new to forum, I have a question about one of my plants. I have 6 different types of bananas, I have had them for 1 year now. My Apple bananas beginning to flower.. we live in zone 9b (Bridge City Texas) and can expect maybe 3 days dipping below freezing for a total of 6 hours. Can I save this rack so it can push out this following spring? Any tips or suggestions are much appreciated.

Good to see another local member. I’m about 3 hours north of you on lake Toledo Bend. Your plant looks awesome! Congrats on the flower. As far as making winter it just depends on the winter. It will make a very mild winter but not a winter like last year. You can bag the bunch with a clear plastic. It will keep the frost off the fruit if they just needed an extra few weeks!
But since it’s just flowering it’s not gonna happen. Not worth saving it. Most pups that come up in spring end up flowering late fall. I like to “reset” mine. Choose a pup to grow around late spring/early summer. Then they will enter winter at full size! And they will have the best chance at the pstem surviving winter then blooming springtime or summer!
Some varities are fast enough to bloom and fill in one season! They are called “short cycle” with techniques you can have many ripe types by most winters! On top of that there is advanced techniques to push faster vegative growth and speed filling.
Feel free to contact me anytime and I can show you some of my research and methods.
Good luck on the flower,
Ty

What varieties does this consist of?

My top 3 are Musa Veinte Cohol. Musa Patupi (my favorite) and Musa Iholena Tigua.
There is a few others. Like the true Lakatan, kluai klui, Pisang Mas, other iholena types, etc. I have a lot of new ones I’m testing! I’m excited to see how it all goes next year!
Most short cycle types hate cold and wet! So be careful. They are very sensitive. If your a beginner maybe start with an Orinoco or something a lot easier to grow! The short cycles are rare and expensive! Dwarf Orinoco is bullet proof and $15.
Good luck. Feel free to contact me for more info or help.

The cultivars I have are Dwarf Brazilian, Raja Puri, Apple, Ice Cream, Dwarf Orinoco, Goldfinger. I am going to try Musa Veinte Cohol, because I have heard someone else tell me they got some tiny bananas off it in our area.

Click on my picture link. Everything pictured was fruited in our area. Your even warmer than me! It’s all about timing. Have the pstems big and strong enough to handle the winter. I try to get them almost full size. Then spring time they put out 5-6 leaves then flower. That’s what I call perfect! Of course winter often messes up a lot of them. Depending on the winter.
I’ve had VC in ground for a few years. They would pup spring time and have ripe fruit by winter! Every year until last year. I lost all 16 mats I had!
Good luck. Hope you get them to make it!!!
