I'm a new mom of a beautiful super dwarf banana plant...I'm pressuming it's super dwarf because it will only grow 3 feet maximum. Other than that, I'm an arm-chair horticulturalist and dabbling herbalist...FUN FUN! Plants are awesome. Hope you're all well, and thanks for letting me join.
Sincerely

But let me tell you something; since I got my banana plant, I've been so preoccupied with taking care of it, that it's literally become equivelent to a new puppy..can you believe that I'm going to take it w/ me on vacation because I can't find anyone to water him while I'm away?? LMAO! IT'S INSANE!
But I love this plant..and I agree Kylie, I did find an awesome forum w/ great peeps..thanks all for the heart felt welcome..

Hi I'm bbbaaaaaaaccckkkk...AND GUESS WHAT! I bought ANOTHER BANANA PLANT! lol...
this time I purchased one from a guy in Clearwater Florida; it's a dwarf cavendish, only grows 5-6 feet, but in a pot, it can be controlled..hell, I have jades and split leaf phils that are 20yrs old that aren't going anywhere but their trunks are as thick as a man's arm...but my new plant isn't growing as fast as my SDC and I can't figure out why :(
so, tell me...is it true that banana plants outside of zone 8 (above it) will die the moment you bring them in for winter in spite of them living in a pot? I read on another site (people from Cali) making fun of us Northerners w/ banana plants, esp. SDC plants...but you should SEE mine! HE'S HUGE!!!!!!!!!!
I dont want him to die...

Hi Alana,
What zone are you in?
No they don't die when brought in. Not usually. They go dormant. Sometimes the change of environment will make them pup though.
Welcome to the Org!!!!!
Great hobby isnt it?

Hi Alana!
Welcome to the club! It seems to have lots of "appeel" so far! :goteam:
I am new to this site too. I just became a first time parent to a Musa Basjoo about 6 weeks ago and does that baby grow! LOL that you took your banana on vacation because that is something I would do too!!! NO ONE will take better care of your naner that you!
We vacation in Florida for two weeks in Feb so I will be doing some research before we go to see what type of banana will thrive in a pot here in Michigan over winter indoors so I can go shopping then to see what is available. I know I will get lots of info from this site! :woohoonaner:

This is by far the nicest *bunch* of people I've ever met on any forum; banana plants must be angel-glue or something...LOL
BUZZYBEE!! i'm in upstate NY (zone 5, pockets of 4), sledding country (snowmobiles) just like MICH...so we get cold...but I've been growing tropical plants for several years up here now, and no problems yet..It's just I got worried when some jokesters from Cali were making fun of Northerners saying that we can't grow tropical plants..I say baloney, but wondered about bananas since they are REALLY tropical, right?
Gang, I love my plants so much...and I'm already figuring out how I can make it more humid for them during the winter...getting ready for them now...glad to hear that they go dormant. I read from some posters that you can actually cut them down (remove leaves and leave the stalk) and just hang on to them till spring?
Just wondered tho; my SDC is still growing like a weed, but my new one, the Dwarf cavendish doesn't seem like it's doing much..the typical growth is you get a leaf, and inside the scrolled up leaf is a tiny leaf ready to burst up once the bigger leaf unfurls, so it's like to leaves in one, right? well the new plant has just a tiny leaf and it's not going anywhere, so I wonder if it's too cold for it compared to where he came from...Oh well...we'll see. There's a nursery not far from here that sells RED or Blood banana plants, and I think I want to own one..they also sell figs..
But thanks again to everyone's well wishes, and welcome to BUZZYBEE!!!

It is possibly a small plant without much of a corm. If so, the plant is driven to put energy into corm and root development.
If the temperatures throughout the day and night are all above 65 (F), then the plant is able to grow. If the average daytime temperature is 75 (F) or so, then there is plenty of warmth.
Overwatering might be a concern. If the plant is in a pot: don't let it sit in water and don't water until the soil you can touch from the holes in the bottom is not soggy and on the drier side of moist. 99 out of 100 plant problems that people bring into a nursery are from overwatering. :)
If you have not fed the plant, consider giving it a small amount of Rose Food. It will help the plant with corm development and also provide a lot of micronutrients. Most of the major brands are great, such as Vigoro granules or Miracle Gro water soluble. The N-P-K numbers on the label will be something like 12-x-10, where x is some value less than 12. A 6" plant can take a teaspoon, a 2 foot plant a Tablespoon.
