View Full Version : Iholena??

I'm curious if this is a Iholena, or something else? I can take more pictures at different angles if needed.
I personally was disappointed how small the bananas they are, but I guess the plant is in a pot...

Probably the most important factor in IDing Iholenas is whether or not there is any red or pink on the underside of leaves, especially when they first unfurl. If not, then it's certainly less likely the plant is an Iholena type.

They have a red/pink on the underside of the leaves. this is one on the younger ones.

isn't it more of a mauve purple?

Looks fine to be an Iholena of some sort to me.
Growing plants in containers will almost always result in smaller fruit, but you also cannot judge size at this stage, they haven't grown yet.

Yes it does, but I've heard so many different ways of saying it so I just used the word Rob used. last time I used the word bronze so now I am not entirely sure what to call the color :)
Thanks Gabe! will you be able to tell which Iholena it is? (I think i understood there are different kinds)
Thanks

Never been disappointed Logee's. Expensive at times but always get the best quality and properly identified plants.

Yes I really like the plants I got from them! Their price is the only thing that keeps me from buying a lot of plants from them. Still haven't fruited the Locaten banana, can't find any of the information they had. But they had written it has orange fruit (inside) a Philippine dessert banana....

I'm guessing these are Mai'a Iholena aka Iholena Iholena aka Dwarf Iholena. My understanding is Agristarts started tissue culturing these after obtaining material from here on the Big Island. This is good to hear, because several years ago the total number of these was estimated to be under 50.

What was the height of the p-stem when it flowered? I have a "Dw. Iholena" which I got from Baker Cr. Seeds, which I assume was a tc from Agristarts. When I asked for more information they said it was "Iholena Iholena", so I'm guessing mine is like yours. Mine hasn't fruited yet, but it ought to be close.

I think this one fruited around 9 1/2 feet. I have two in the ground that are around 10 + and still haven't fruited.

The coloring of the plant is correct for the dwarf Iholena, however the stature and height is wrong, and it seems a few other folks have had similar plants. Environment always plays a role, but I doubt it would have this type of effect.
I think what may have happened is something that is all to common, Agri-Starts does not periodically field-verify starting material and initiate new tissue culture lines, which inevitably leads to the production and mass distribution of off-types. It seems possible that they are now a distributing a sort of tall-reversion off type from the original dwarf. Since the mutation to dwarfish is fairly simple and common, the reversion back to a tall form is not that far out, and this type of mutation (changes in height/stature) happen frequently in tissue culture labs with subpar quality control.

Here is one of my recent true to type dwarf Iholena. This was fruiting at about 6ft. As you can see also, the plant is very stout, with a thick pseudostem and droopy leaves, which is more or less the classic dwarf habit.
Even in containers, and in less than ideal conditions, the dwarfs tend to keep the dwarf stature.

I wasn't able to see the picture for some reason, it just had a - there.:(
Is there any other plant it would be? Or is it a tall Iholena, I definitely agree its not a dwarf. I should take i picture of the stature of the plants in the ground before I dig them up.
Last night I moved in the one thats fruiting. We are getting down to 31˚f this coming week!

Yes, Sarah Brubaker, mine looks like yours rather than like Gabe's unfortunately. Mine does not have the short, wide leaves that dwarfs typically have. I noticed that right away and have been wondering about that for quite a while now. I think Gabe's explanation is probably right on target. :(

From my research and talking to Logees. They have their own TC lab and it is all done by them. I was told the dwarf iholena was acquired by them from Hawaii (sounded like in person). And they had them and was selling the their clone before agristarts was sent their material.
I have a friend in Florida who fruited one of the agristarts clones and said the fruit tasted very good! His also fruited at dwarf size! 7’-8’ I have a picture of his bunch uploaded to my Flickr. It’s in the album iholena iholena.
Here is a picture of my dwarf iholena from Logees. It’s been a good grower. It is a iholena type for sure!

Cloudy is not necessarily bad. Like a giant softbox, less shadows.
But also less light, somewhat.

Yeah, listening to Gabes advice about lookin at a LOT of plants. the only way I'm going to get to do that is by the ones on here and what I see around, I don't travel as much as Gabe has to specifically banana lands, but I can try. :)
what do you have that you're trying to ID?

Finally they are starting to ripen! its been around 16 weeks since the flower appeared, oct 8 - jan 30. not as short as I wished, but it didn't have the best temp either while it was ripening. it went down to low 40s sometimes, now I'am keeping the temps up a little higher since we have tomatoes in the greenhouse. try not let it get below 55 but 60 is my goal. this morning the temp outside was 8, not as low as the Northern States!
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=64330&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=64330)
And I could'nt resist so had to try it! even tho it's a little under ripe.
I had a DC that the bunch broke before completely filling out so that is what I was comparing with and my memory.
I would say it had a neat tart flavor to it. not sure what else to say since that was the most distinct difference I noticed.
next time I try one I'll think more while I'am eating it :) I was very impressed with the orange/pinkish color and trying a new banana that I didn't think enough about it.
When I try a ripe one I'll try give a better flavor report.

Here is my thread on the same issues. It has pictures of both the Dwarf Iholena and the TALL Dwarf Iholena. These both came out of the same batch from Agristarts. There seems to be a lot of the full size off types coming out. My rack was larger on the full size but it could have been cultural differences since mine were getting more nutrients and water than the true dwarf at my friends farm.

Interesting!
I wouldn't mind having the short kind :) I have to put them in my greenhouse for the winter and I don't have that size greenhouse.
This year I am planning to plant out some bigger plants and get them to fruit outside!
I'm still not sure how to tell when they are fully ripe since I hear they turn yellow before they are completely ripe.
The taste report so far is that they have a "citrus flavor" (a little acidic) and they definitely are softer than a DC . I'll give a better report when all of my family give there opinions.

i just acquired some new banana varieties.. this being one of them
came via agristarts but indirectly
has the coloured underside
is it specifically the dwarf version which is rare?
