Hi, guys, first post. Nice to see a website just devoted to banana growing.

Anyway, I grow just about everything I can and was recently gifted a few small banana plants from a neighbor who is moving. I live in the Sacramento area of California and didn't know you could grow bananas here. Apparently you can!

Don't ask what variety they are, I don't know. He said he would put them inside over the winter, or the main plant would usually die, but still put out shoots in the summer.

So I'm wondering if there's a basic guide to growing bananas in cold climates? I realize I can learn a lot of strategies from reading posts but I was wondering if there was some general info I should read up on. So far I've noticed that they don't like direct sun, like any baby plant. I have they under a tree canopy with some filtered sunlight before I decide what to do with them.

Get varieties that do well in colder weather. Cavendish and tall reds are not good. For me SH 3640 has been tops. 9b is not cold at all for many wonderful varieties. FHIA 3, FHIA 18, Rajja Puri or any other variety the stalk can survive. If the variety you have has a stalk that dies it may not be a good variety.
