Good morning all,

First I want to say that I love being part of this group. I don't post a lot but I read a lot and have learned a lot since I bought my first plant in 2015. I thought I bought an ice cream banana but recently learned it's actually a tall namwah. Over the years I have added to my banana plant collection and finally this year I have edible fruit! Yesterday when I came home from work I had to look twice and even take a close up picture before I let myself be excited...YELLOW bananas!

I take the plant inside. It stays in my foyer under a light through the winter. I did have another bunch of bananas (from mother plant) that didn't ever plump up. I think it's because that plant flowered in the summer and I let it stay out in the cold for too long. This year I will bring in ALL of my banana plants when the night temperatures reach the low 50's. What type of banana are you growing? How long have you had it?

hi, great job!
how old is the plant?
did it start to flower while still indoors in the spring?

The plant is a little less than a year and a half. It flowered in the house in February. When the night temperatures were at around 60 degrees we (4 of us very carefully) took the plant outside and tied it to the house and put rebar around the pot in hopes of keeping the plant upright.

Now that a few fingers have yellowed cut down the bunch and hang it indoors where pets can't get at it. As hands yellow up cut off the hand and let ripen on the kitchen counter. Leave the bunch outside too long and the critters will help them selves!!!

These don't look like Namwah. Saba type perhaps?

They do look more like Saba.

Either way, CONGRATS!

Congratulations!

It may be the camera angle but that plant looks really, really tall. Incredible to get such a plant to fruit so far north.

The banana tastes amazingly sweet. Wow! I have tasted a namwah and would guess that's what it is. I haven't tasted a saba but I don't think it would be super sweet (although I could be wrong). Of course it didn't occur to me at the time that I should take a picture of the peeled banana...don't know if that would help in identification or not. I did take some measurements of the plant, I don't know if that will help and I will upload a peeled banana tomorrow morning (when I continue with my banana celebration during breakfast). I am happy to say that it looks like I have around 40 plump bananas!

The base of the banana plant has a 2 foot circumference.

The height of the plant (approximate of course because of the curve of the top of the plant near the stem) is a little less than 11 feet.

Please, don't shoot the messenger, but, the base of your plant has a 2 feet circumference which implies an approximate 2/PI = 0.64 feet = 7.6 inch diameter. It looks to me as though the top of your pot is about 2 feet in diameter.

It is an impressive feat, not to be confused with "impressive feet."

Thanks for the correction on that!!!

Yes, pictures of the fruit, including the peel, and a cross-section of fruit will help. Definitely not a namwah. Looks a lot like Cardaba too. Yes, ripe Saba can be quite sweet.

It's double tough to get ripe fruit that far north... Congrats.

Good Morning,

Here are a few banana pictures. The bananas taste great so to me it doesn't really matter what type of banana it is, BUT I have several pups available and I certainly don't want to sell or trade them to someone and they have the surprise that I did...(What do you mean it's not an Ice Cream Banana plant?)

If you think you might know what this banana is or isn't please let me know.

Thanks,

Sandy

The "scaring" on the skin still makes me think it is Saba or related.

Congratulations! That is quite the accomplishment!

They still look like Saba to me. The scaring on the peel is typical of Saba but not of Namwah, in my experience.

Whatever the variety, it is still an impressive feat.
