Would just cutting my Musa basjoo down to the ground and covering with a plastic trash bag then adding about 3 -6 inches of mulch on top work? Just worried about it rotting. Anyone tried this before? Last year I dug up the tree and toss in my garage but this year I am trying to keep it simple as possible. I am in zone 7 maryland.

I folded all my basjoo leaves down against pseudo-stems and then covered in bubble-wrap with a few ventilation holes, followed by horticultural fleece bags. The leaves will blacken and die-off by spring but they help to insulate the stems. In spring, after removing the dead leaves, the pseudo-stems will send out new growth. Mine survived temperatures down to -5 centigrade (about23 Fahrenheit). See 3 x images in my gallery. Good luck!
