Hi everyone!
I was wondering if it is normal for a voodoo lily stem to curl up and have it's leaves die at this time of year. The leaves were large and healthy for a long time. Smaller and younger stems are alive and healthy from the same growth area.
Thoughts?
Thanks. Erik

Which "voodoo lily" are you referring to?
Amorphophallus konjac, Sauromatum venosum, Amorphophallus bulbifer, Dracunculus vulgaris......?
Can you provide as photo?
There are many plants that go by the common name of Voodoo Lily so it depends what exactly you have as to how long its season is.
For example, my dracunculus vulgaris have now finished, withered and gone for the season but my sauromatum venosum are just now starting to yellow on the leaves so in a few more weeks they too will be gone for the season.

Thanks for your reply. I think I have venosum based on pictures.
Glad to hear that some types wither. I wasn't sure what to expect.

They do look like sauromatum venosum and I'd say they're starting to wind down for the season. Once the leaves start going, the stalks will wilt and they will die right back until spring.
Your zone appears to be at their limit so you may want to cover or store them for the winter.
This photo of my plants was taken about 10 days ago but yesterday I noticed some yellowing on the leaves.

I bought them off ebay in November and they were advertised to be flowering size. (Didn't happen this year!) Still new to this plant but they look cool.
That's good advice for winter! I will dig up some and also cover a few outside depending on how many bulbs I have.
Thanks!

They do that.
If you lift the bulb for winter look for small bulblets which have formed on the main corm.
Some will break away when you lift it and they look like brown marbles.
Those will be new plants next year.

Thanks!
I just dug them up yesterday. I had planted six bulbs in spring and now many more small ones as you described. Hopefully the big one will flower!
I rinsed them off and set in my garage to dry. The larger bulbs had a minor amount of mushy material that i removed.

The mush is the old bulb and is usually found on the bottom of the new bulb.
The mush on the top of the bulb is the junction of the old stem which has now deteriorated.
They look good.
Blooming size for that plant is about baseball +size.

This years mild winter temperatures will cause these plant to break dormancy a few weeks early.

Yea, what a wonderfully mild winter so far..!!
Hopefully my basjoos are healthy under the mulch outside and the fig trees should be strong since we didn't get extremely cold winds. My honeyberry bushes are showing signs of budding. My voodoo lily collection has some 2-4" sprouts on the bigger bulbs sitting in my garage. The urashima has started to root (good thing I had it in a ziploc bag with some moist peat moss! and my newest addition of snowdrops (thanks to a friend) are almost ready to bloom....
I don't know if the groundhog saw its shadow or not this weekend, but I do hope they keep the tradition going. The animal's life isn't that bad - free food, no predators, and no .22 rifles to worry about!
Think spring!
