I was at a Lowe's store yesterday and saw several banana plants labeled basjoo with red splotches on the leaves and stalks. There were 8 or so plants and every one of them had the red. The tags and even the pots were labeled basjoo. I've grown basjoo bananas for 10 years and usually look them over when I'm in a nursery. I've never seen a red variegated basjoo. Is this something new?

As I recall, the size, shape, and texture of the leaves were exactly like the basjoo plants I have. If I can get back there, I'll pick one up. It's hard to tell from a picture. The plants were a foot tall or less. It could be one of these. This is a Lowe's in St. Louis County, Missouri. They don't usually have any bananas.

No such animal...the plant is mislabeled.

If it were a new intro it would be on specialty sites and cost more than 8.99.
Sounds like a great find......I will take all of them.

The plant is most likely a cavendish.

Agree with Cin, most likely to be cavendish.

Cavendish, I concur.

Musa Acuminata Zebrina, most likely.

I sell one gallon pups with a pup in at the local farmers market for $20.

I've found that they get better color if you give them some protection from the midday sun.

When I was about 5 years old, my father came home and said, "I bought a new red car. Come out on the street and see." When I saw it, it was, in fact, maroon. My disappointment was enough to make me remember the incident for 67 years.

This was around 1951 before Edsels were made. I suspect that it was a Studebaker or Desoto. This might have been it or my father's car before he bought the maroon one:

Were the leaves like this?
It would be a good find for an ornamental for cheap.
