He keeps asking me and sending me pics and asks if there is any hope What do you all think? In early spring the bud was coming up from the ground and not a an actual tree.

Congratulations to your friend!....Tell your friend that no Nana plant, P-stem or leaves will come out from the one flowering/blooming!....Once the Nana plant reach flowering and/or blooming stage, it's on their final stage!.....

So what kind of banana do you think it is? All of mine have red /burgundy flowers. Never seen one with a yellow flower We are in NC

It looks as Musa Basjoo to me!......
The bracts on my basjoo are a similar size but burgundy in colour.
And the fruit is longer.

He lives about 2 hours from me and was so excited. I told him I would not hold out hope.
He is excited to know he finally got some fruit even though from what I read they are not edible. Is that true?

It was a corm or a TC plant?.......It can be the growing and/or environmental conditions, history of the plant!......

Musa Basjoo it's considered not an edible type of Nana Variety!......
