Our latest harvest of Gros Michel produced an unusual amount of cracked open fruit. Weather wise, the rainy season has started a full six weeks ago. I wonder if any of the members have an explanation for this undesirable phenomenon. Thank you!

Hummm ... Some varieties have a thin skin and this happens when the finger is turning ripe. But I don't think this is a problem with the GM. .... So may be the rains have accelerated the finger growth causing the splits. The bunches needed to have been harvested as soon as the fingers had obtained their popper size. Delayed harvesting and the rains seems to have caused this.

Ask around and your local Ag Agent for advice.

Thank you, delay could be a cause however I am also wondering if the skin is not weakened by the spots that have also appeared with the rains. We have started bagging much earlier now to see if there is any improvement.
