Hello! Not only am I new to the forum but I’m new to plants period. So a lot of the terminology people use, I don’t know. So bear with me. I asked for a Dwarf Cavendish for Mother’s Day. My teenage son bought me one (from Lowe’s, not a local nursery). Lowe’s is of no help. Let me give all the details. I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Received this plant in May. It came with 4 pseudostems already. I don’t know how to tell which is the main one and which are pups. I’m attempting to attach pictures to show you guys. But it keeps telling me to NOT attach pics in the post, only to my gallery? Not sure how to let you see them easily. Also, I have transferred it into a new pot (obviously. It didn’t come in this pot, lol). It took awhile to be delivered so I didn’t move into a new pot until this week; about a month after receiving. The pot is 13”dia x 24”h and 7.5 gallon. I did go to a local nursery to ask questions about soil, etc and they directed me to buy a bag of their general potting soil (said it had really good drainage) and a bottle of Osmocote (that says “smart release plant food 15-9-12). When putting in the pot, I put a pretty deep layer of soil on the bottom bc it’s such a tall pot and the plant is very small right now. Then dig a hole and made sure there were at least 3” on all sides. I mixed the Osmocote with the top 1-3 inches of soil like the back of the bottle says. It is placed in an area on my back patio that receives direct sun most of the day but pretty crazy direct sun from about 3:30pm-5pm. It seems as though the leaves may be burning?

All that to ask these questions:
How do I tell which is the main plant/pseudostalk and which are pups?
Do I need to remove any?
Is the plant getting too much sun?

Welcome to bananas.org.

My guess would be that there isn't a main plant and pups yet. It might have been a piece of a corm that just made 4 small plants. Did the label from Lowes say "Dwarf Cavendish"?

With 4 plants in one pot, I'd divide them in half. That would give you 2 plants per pot. Then definitely put them in the shade until they recover. Or you could just leave them as is, put them in partial shade for a while and deal with that later. After they recover (week or so), you might want to plant one half in the ground and keep the other half in the pot as insurance for when winter comes.

What I'd say is that with the heat that we have, any re-potted plants should be in at least partial shade during the heat of the day until they adapt or the weather cools off. (I checked and Baton Rouge is getting in the 90's almost like our weather in Central Texas.)

I'll defer to more knowledgeable members if they reply.
