Hi everyone,

I just purchased a banana plant or i should say plants as it had pupped and now has 4 other plants in the pot. I got this at our local nursery and they did not know the variety. I bought it anyway. :ha: I got a good deal as they were trying to get rid of it. I was wondering if you guys can help me identify what type of banana plant it is.

Also I'm thinking of separating them. They will be planted in the ground for the summer and then taken indoors for winter. Let me know what you all think. Also if you need a better picture, let me know and I will post more.

I originally posted this in the main discussion and later realized it was the wrong place. Sorry for the double post!

Thank you!

How is the plant looking now?
A photo of any red tinge to the underside of the leaf will help.

I would separate them and try 3 in ground and repot one... Considering the length of your winters there, it may overwinter better in a pot. As an experiment.

Also, nobody can tell you for sure what it is at this point, but I think it's safe to say it is not in the Gros Michel / Cavendish group. In the store in your area and not Cavendish is most likely to be Basjoo, which may even survive the winter there with a little mulching. Make sure the soil is sandy and drains well.

Have some fun since you have 4... Try 2 as bare root dormants over winter, one in a pot and one left in the ground... If the one left in the ground makes it and it's not the mildest winter ever recorded there, it's a Basjoo for sure.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for getting back. I have separated them all and planted 4 in ground and one in a pot. I had originally thought it wasn't a basjoo as I have one and thought they looked a little different. Here are some close ups of the underside and the top side of the leaves.
