Does anyone know about a variety of banana called Largo? I just got a keiki from a grower here on the island of Hawaii. In the wiki entry for this variety it says that it's a cooking banana. The grower who gave it to me said it's been grown on the island for many decades. But he didn't say it was a cooking banana. Has anyone had any experience with it?

From what I understand, "Largo" is a synonym for Orinoco. It can be eaten cooked, or without being cooked when it is ripe. I think they say it's best when it is slightly speckled. It is a very common banana on the Texas Gulf coast. Very hardy. I have both the dwarf and the tall Orinoco. My tall Orinoco at our place in zone 9B is pretty reliable about fruiting with no protection. We have a Dwarf Orinoco at our home in zone 8B and it fruited last year with minimal winter protection. The dwarf bunch was as big as the tall and fruited at eye level. I think I prefer the dwarf now.
You live in Hawaii? You lucky dog! :)
