start this thread out with a song. or two. johnny cash; folsom prison blues. er more or less

I hear fedex a comin
its rollin round the bend
they aint seen sunshine....since....I don't know when
I have been sittin on this here porch here
and time keeps draggin on
but fedex is a comin
and their comin home

nother one. you will know it.

there is a yard in middleburg
they call the rising sun
I plant bananas
oh yes bananas...just to have some fun

oh mother tell your children
not to do the things I've done
don't plant bananas no not bananas...just to have some fun :ha:

OK so well.........when tytaylor came on the org and said he was selling tc's, to be more specific fe'i aiuri tc's. and they were not available in the U.S. and they might be difficult to grow and not exactly sure what zones they would survive in...........well........... given the fact that my thumb is more grease than green...........I decided to by two. :bungejumpnaner: got them Monday. usps not fedex :ha:

so if you would buy some tc's from him.......he's got other varieties....... here is what to expect. I beleive

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=63033&size=1

I opened the box up and.......
OMG did I void the warrantee :ha: it says at the top; READ THIS BEFORE UNBOXING. ..........well anyways the first thing I see is this, detailed instuctions on the care for your tc's. :08: so being the man I am I put it to the side. now the water mark in the center is not water, its a banana leaf. next thing I see is this;

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=63036&size=1

let me tell you here and now do NOT bring out yu old steak knife that has never seen a sharpener or your dollar store shears! these babies are well put to bed safe.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=63035&size=1

one out one to go.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=63034&size=1

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=63038&size=1

according to the instructions and a previous email with ty [I was forwarned]. I could not find the burpee seed starter or cactus mix so I got the burpee growing mix. now what is not in this picture is where it says for CONTAINER PLANTS and raised bed gardening. I have previously been using jungle growth potting soil but after it went up in price I started to have problems so I wanted to try something else.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=63040&size=1

burpee is on the left, jungle growth on the right. I have been noticing sand in the jungle growth lately........... my problem?...........DEFINITELY ..............A CONFIDENCE BOOSTER

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=63039&size=1

all potted up. I didn't take a pic of the roots. I want to get them in soil as fast as I can to avoid any root damage. the roots were starting to get root bound, healthy. 6 inch pots, couldn't go any smaller, we have cats. 30 to 50 percent perlite just as the instructions said. ha, you thought I didn't read them. this is closer to 50 percent.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=63037&size=1

less than 48 hours after potting; the cigar leaf is rolling out. today, Thursday the leaf has almost fully rolled out. I might've not gotten to much grease on them. from my thumb.

:birthdaynana: if yu go to bananapups.com ty has more than tc's to sell.......many varieties............depending on availability as understand.

beautiful plants ty; packaged with heart.....................................thank you

Thank you Beam!

They arrived great! Just drink your v8 and they will look straight haha. I hope they grow great for you. Not sure how many millions of musa I have shipped (feels like it) but as you can see I use a lot of tape! A lot! I’m sure 90% of the recipients curse me removing it all! But it’s so important to keep those 4” pots or corms if pups very very secure! You want 0 movement! None! So if you goto ship a Musa corm anywnere!!! First clean all soil off and trim roots back! Then mix 1 part bleach to 3 parts water and let it sit in it for 10 minutes! Rinse it off very well, seal it up and strap it down tight! If you do have a Musa problem the corm need to be peeled and boiled!

I’m impressed by Fei so far! The ones I’m keeping and the few I have left have really impressed me! They are growing insanely fast! No doubt in my mind 3-4 weeks from now I will have at least one in the ground! I still have quite a few Mysore - PC plants I’m selling. They came in the same shipment as the Fei. The Fei have blown them away! I will have to measure some and put it on my flikr. I will announce when I do.

Thanks again Beam!
And the website is brand new! So I still have a lot of work to do on it. I want it as a payment option and also as a Musa Info site! Where you can click on a variety and see my growing notes, height, cycle time, and cold hardiness all in one spot! I also want it where visitors can leave reviews on the variety and their comments about it. So lots of work to be done!

Everyone who got a Fei please keep me and the org informed on how it’s growing, etc. I’m curious to see how it grows in different environments.

Take care Beam,
Ty

your welcome ty.
I did the same thing for baker creek tc's. they sold out in a week. found out when I wanted to buy some more. you give great advice freely I figured I would do the same for you. :ha:

but the best part was the advice about the potting soil. worth what I paid for the tc's.
I knew I had a problem but didn't kno what. I had 6 dc's in pots I wanted to do a winter experiment with, well 12 days of freeze killed the experiment and the plants. a couple of days ago I dumped out the pots and found a ton of sand in the center of most of the pots. don't take pics dang it. but this was after buying the tc's and talking to you so it all came to light. seemed every time I watered [misting was/is the best thing that worked] they would go to town and then stop. made my watering times eradic and confusing. and was loosing tc's for no reason. before I couldn't kill em. thought it was me. it was I guess, not paying enough attention. my potting soil had changed up.

and I can see now it was also affecting my other plants that weren't tc's.

oh yes and I forgot. the second plant started to put out a new leaf last night.

I received my Fe’i about 3 weeks ago. Definitely impressed as to your packing! Not any leaf damage whatsoever. I potted it up taking in account the instructions, but sort of did it my own way... i placed it in my greenhouse and it’s started putting new leaves out. Then the strangest things started happening in my yard, I live in Oakland, CA, in what’s known as the Grand Lake District. A street person started entering my yard when it was apparent that no one was home, and moving plants around, releasing my chickens, fiddling with my watering system, etc. Well, the Fe’i got moved out of the greenhouse by this person and I had enough to deal with figuring out what changes had been done to my watering system so the Fe’i had been outside for a few days before I noticed it. It seems fine, so I’ve left it out. My yard is now locked and I put up surveillance cameras.

:2722: well it's been almost 4 weeks since I received these puppies. figured I would do an update.

each are putting out their second leaf. but the most notable thing is the growth of the p-stem. the smallest ones the p-stem has grown 3 inches and the largest has grown 2 inches. so far this new potting soil, the burpee, has far far surpassed the jungle growth for tc's. I am well pleased. thanks ty for the advice.

last week I repotted a fhia 17 that for 9 months has been doing nothing. she had one white root coming from the original root ball when it was sent to me. she seems to be responding.

Thanks for the update guys! Mine and few for sale I have left are getting really big! I did plant one in the ground! Way too early of course but I couldn’t help it lmao. It got a little sunburn but is still pushing.

Keep the updates coming! I’m really impressed how well of a grower fei is. I am so thankful for the Hawaiian Musa collector that made this avaliable. I’m not going to say his name for his privacy. But I feel he hasn’t received the Thanks he deserves!

I can’t thank you enough! You seriously made my dream to grow fei here in TX come true!

Lookin' good! I like how the leaves are getting bigger! Are you giving it fertilizer already? I haven't given mine any yet. Recently I moved the pot more into the shade. It's been getting hot here in Central Texas! Now I wish I had bought 2 of them so I could have planted one at our 9B place on the coast!

Wooohooo! Glad your are going good too! Mine in larger parts are getting huge! I have some that are throwing pups! I’m sure it’s from the TC process! Anyone else have a “pup” come up? If i get a lot more throwing them I will send you another!

How is all the other stuff doing? Any hogs?

Mudturkle
06-06-2018, 02:13 PM
Wow! You have pups already? Supposedly they don't pup very well. Like I said, maybe we have to take what we have read with a grain of salt. Have you been fertilizing them to cause that? Or do you think it is the larger pots, or both? I up-potted once to a 3 gal? pot. I've been trying to be very conservative with my treatment of it so far because of their reputation of being hard to grow. It sounds like maybe I can start being a little more aggressive with my water and fertilizer. I wanted to post a picture but it's been a while apparently I've forgotten how. I'll email you one. The hog hunting was a bust as the Forest Service had burned that area and chased all the game out. We very much enjoyed visiting with you and getting to see what you are doing with your bananas. Does it seem that your plan to grow them close together is working out? The last time I was at our place near Sargent (9B) all the bananas were taking off and looking good.

Thanks!

No absolutely no fertilizer. I’ll take some pics of the pups and the one in the ground next time im out there with my tablet. I think the pups are from the TC process. A lot of times when I cut any culture plant there will be another tiny growth point with the little corm. Usually this second active growth point will come up in the pot early on. So it’s actually an offshoot already active and not activated by the main plant. It’s pretty cool. I won’t remove any until the plant is in ground and decent size!

The close planting (4’+/-) works so good for me. And I have plenty of room as you saw! They just grow better that way. Also remember I only allow 1 pstem per planting for most of the growing process! No pups! One plant gets all the space!

I love this new potting mix! :08: my aiuri's are throwing out a third leaf. the little one is growing faster than the big one. even my fhia-17 which I repotted about 3 weeks ago is looking much better. throwing out its second leaf. the response is 100 percent better.

the plants are not only getting sun hardened but also getting wind hardened by me carrying them in and out of the porch to the shade under the dogwood.

thanks hector for the pics. awesome creature.

mine have gained another 2 inches in the last month. I have lost count on how many leaves have come up since I acquired them. they both just put out a new leaf and another is coming up. the little one is still gaining on the large one. its got another 1/2 inch to go to catch up. fastest tc's I have grown. I forgot them and the sun caught up with them where I keep them in the morning. got I bit sunburned but it has not slowed the growth any.

happy 4th every one.

time fro an up date. so yall can see your progress.

mine are doing well despite a bug wanting to put holes in some leaves its gone now. they have made 15 and 16 inches p-stem height. still rather spindly looking. I figure to do a picture in November. I repotted to a 10 inch pot for the winter, figuring on planting them in the spring.

We had a fairly cool summer which kept my fe’i aiuri’s growth slow. We finally had warm weather in September and October. However, it’s cooled off again and a couple of weeks ago my fe’i showed some browning of its leaves, so it’s in the greenhouse now and looks like a new leaf has started again.

my plants have been doing very well, they are now in the dining room for the winter. most of it anyway. they went from 15 and 16 inches in September to 19 and 22 inches after repotting in a 10 inch pot. looking great.

on a side note I left them outside when the nights were in the lower 50's, taking a chance, and they did very well.

How is everyone's Fei looking now? Mine is kinda sad. First it was hot and dry, then it started raining everyday. When it was hot and dry I buried the pot in the ground so that it wouldn't dry out too much. Then when it started raining everyday I was busy and forgot about it until cold threatened and my wife reminded me to do some sort of winter protection. So I brought the pot in the house, but I noticed that it had gotten *too wet* and wasn't happy. So I repotted it into a bigger pot hoping it would let it dry out. All of the new material in the pot was *dry* and I resisted the urge to water. An old leaf died, but it was unrolling a new one, so I thought OK. But after the new leaf almost finished unrolling it started looking droopy. And I don't see a new leaf forming yet. I'm getting worried. How can I know if it needs water? Do I need to unpot it, check the roots, and maybe put it it a smaller pot? Help!

Mudturkle,

WOW!.....Your Fe'i Aiuri it's big!....I bet she got shocked!.......Let her recover!....Keep adding water to a minimum for now!.....Over watering it's one of the easiest way to kill a Nana plant!....

What medium/soil are you using?......I suggest you use a soilless medium!.....It will drain faster!......My favorite is pool filter silica coarse sand mix lots and lots of perlite for Nanas in pots!.....

Also, every time I transplant a Nana to a bigger or another pot, initially, I add water to remove any air pockets traps between the medium/soil.....Then I won't add water for a couple of days!....I always maintain Nanas in pots on the dryer side!.....

*****Over watering it's one of the easiest way to kill a Nana plant!*****

Hopefully it helps!.....

I left several of my big ones out and they were hit by our mid November frost. I think it was 30f or so for a few hours.

Musa Fei I can confirm has absolutely 0 cold hardiness. They make cavendish look like a basjoo!!! I still believe they will fruit in South FL and southern CA. At the time of the cold my largest outside was about 4’ tall. Big beautiful leaves!

the fe'i auri are the tallest ones gracing the dining room. far left is pitogo, the 2 to the right are cardaba [smaller one] and pisang raja.

in the background is a jacaranda tree [the tall stick hard to see] and a fhia 17.

the fe'i are now 19 and 22 inches stem heighth. from 15 and 16 inches at the end of October.

I just added a new Mailing List/Newsletter to my website. I am doing away with my old “waitlist” and the newsletter will be replacing it. This newsletter will ONLY be used to announce upcoming rare pups and other pups/plants availability. All about plants available for sale/trade and upcoming pups/plants. NO SPAM and NO other emails.

So sign up today if your interested in my availability. I am just trying to streamline things and make it easier on me. Last year I could not keep up.

Just goto www.bananapups.com/newsletter (http://www.bananapups.com/newsletter)

Thank you!

Sounds like it needs water!

It was the old "lack of water because you watered too much and the roots died" or "lack of water because you didn't water enough" question. I think I made a mistake by up-potting it when I brought it in the house after I noticed that it was drowning and that winter was almost on me. I think the bigger pot made it harder to tell if it was too much/not enough. I tried checking the pot to see if it was dry but I was never sure. Meanwhile the leaves died, one by one. When the last one died I cut it off at ground level and repotted it into a smaller pot, hoping that it would make pups. Yay! So far I see two tiny pups! When they get a little bigger I will separate them. Come spring I will keep one in a pot and plant the other in the ground next to our house at Sargent in 9B.

Can you post pics of the pups please? I have a pup emerging from a plant I cut off that got VERY unhappy with the mid to low 40 degree weather and constant wind on it during that time.

Not much to see. The one on the right is 4+ inches and the other one is 1+ inch so far. But you asked, so here it is. I thought about when we were comparing with a yardstick! :)

Here is an update of mine. One got REAL unhappy with the temps in the upper 40's and strong winds. The other which is protected by larger musa and also not exposed to real heavy wind is pictured below.
