An old school grower of sorts but bananas are all new to me.
Hoping to meet other growers in my area,to see what these plants look like in person and learn some tricks to get the most out of my plants.
Two Blue Java will ship 4/26 from Florida and I'm still not even sure the best method to adjust them to their new climate for great growth.
My guess would be outdoors in bright shade for a week then move into more sun in the following week, and transplant soon because it's prolly shipped in a minimum of soil medium?

So after some reading and the desire to order another plant I have chosen a Manzano over the Brazilian variety.
Living in Maui their "Apple" or "Hawaiian Apple" was always my favorite which I believe is the Manzano variety.
The posts on the two seem to be confusing, and the place I'm using this time ordering only has this one and not until June.
Both seem to do well here in OC Calif. and I'm sure I'll have both soon enough to directly compare.
If anyone has any direct experiences with both please chime in.

Hi Scott, the apple banana you ate in Hawaii is Dwarf Brazilian or Brazilian, not Manzano. I grow both. You can see full grown plants growing right next to each other. Dwarf Brazilian is a must have.

I've grown both in Rancho Penasquitos, CA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rancho_Pe%C3%B1asquitos,_San_Diego). The Manzano is good and the Brazilian better.
As others have pointed out, Hawaiian Apple == Brazilian. There's a discussion on this board about Manzano having been developed in Africa ... if not I'm happy to be corrected. :)

My mistake on that text, stated that backwards.
And although my source online only offers the Manzano which will ship June 1st I reached out to see if he has access to and can send the BD.
We shall see,I just want the same sweet tasty banana I loved so much living in Maui.
Thanx all

I saw Steve L had DB's hanging a while back.. I know I can't get them to come thru unless I had an awesome El Nino', (and I'll take them anytime from Mother nature over this last winter) then I might get lucky.. I like manzano's so a DB would be a nicety, lord knows burrow banana's don't make the cut unless ur cooking..

That little DB pup I picked up last April and put into my trunk is over six feet tall now and loving these warmer temps.
I have not given it any fertilizer,I need to look into sourcing some ASAP.

Fertilize, fertilize and fertilize. Those are my three rules for growing bananas! They grow so fast that they need a lot of fertilizer, especially if you grow them in pots.
Is it in the ground yet?

Just wanted to say howdy, I'm near Pasadena. Never grown bananas (except for a failed one last year I'm quite ashamed of). Now I have slightly more yard space so I'm interested in getting a few in the ground!

Yeah, you should post some photos of the Blue Java fruit.
Even if you are giving away the plants for free it would be good for members to see if you have the real one. Nobody likes wasting 2 or 3 years to find out that they got the fake one.
Thanks

Good idea. The fruit that was on my Blue Java is now gone but I do have a couple photos of previous fruit in my photo album. Here they are.

I definitely need to get some better pictures next time it fruits.
