OH heck ! .... To quote a post in the ref thread: NO, not at all. Barely survives low 40s.
So I would say the Tu'u Ghia is a solid zone 10 or 11 banana plant. Worst than a Gros Michel. ... Oh well may be you can send me a sample if you get fruit. I'm sure you can/will rub it in on the forum. ... hahaha .. Good Luck and keep it warm.

HMelendez do I understand correctly that you sterilize the planting hole itself with bleach? Is it due to special conditions i.e. known and aggressive local nematode problem, bugs, etc.?
I'm familiar with cleaning pup corn/roots with bleach but first time I have read someone applying it to the hole.
Thanks!

I always have been using bleach to sterilize the corm and/or the transplanting hole, then let it dry for a couple of hours before transplanting the Nana plant as a *****preventive measurement!*****It is a reality that we got corm weevils, nematodes, etc. all over Florida!...
Also, *****as another preventive measurement, *****I always use clean coarse sand in all my Nanas or any type of "soilless mix" (sphagnum peat moss, rice hulls, pool silica coarse sand, perlite, etc.).....Plus it helps tremendously for......(Keyword)......AERATION!.........
Hopefully it helps!

Haha ... Seems like a little over a year ago I stated to use diluted bleach to clean corms and I shocked most every one (those that replied anyway). thought I was about to be Banned on the forum from the comments. ... So now about everybody is using bleach on their corms and those that were doing it have come out about it. ... Bleach will break down in a short while to chlorine gas, chloride, and water after it kills the little bugs. Years ago, I used bleach in my bath water to get rid of Red Bugs (aka: chiggers). Gone like instantly and no scratching for days like I've seen others have. OH, damn good for athlete foot too! I haven't had either or done it again in years since.

I wouldn’t touch a corm that hasn’t touched bleach! About 1:4 diluted. I go through a lot!

I hope all goes well with it... As far as taste goes, I have not tried it but would put Paggi up against just about any musa for flavor... Now you need to get that one grounded so you can do a side by side with this one... and let us all know, of course.
TY...1:4? I usually go with a half cup in a couple gallons and it seems to burn the roots. I am scared to go stronger. (I swish em around in there for a couple minutes, though)
Tytaylor77

Oh they can take it! When you TC Musa you take a tiny little piece of tissue and dip it in 100% denatured alcohol! 1:4 is the recommendation for TC also. And that tiny little explant soaks for 10-15 mins. Musa is a pretty amazing plant! I’ve hit pstems with a pretty good spray of roundup and they don’t slow down!
I eyeball it. I use an old “big” coffee can made of plastic. I bet I range from 1:4 to 1:6 or so. I have nothing bad here so I normally let it soak for 5mins or so. Incoming corms get pealed and soak for a good 20 mins. I’ve accidently left one overnight before and it never slowed down!
I’m not sure the exact ratio to kill say nematodes. I bet it’s not much! Think of how much they add to tap water, etc. now if your talking borers I wouldn’t touch bleach! I would boil the corms!! That’s the only proven method to kill them! I’ll take my grubs well done!
I have boiled some before! Just as a test! I think it said 15 minutes! I’m pretty sure I got scared and pulled it out at 10mins. Didn’t hurt the corm at all! And pealing a corm correctly wont even set you back! I can root a peeled coem just as fast as a non peeled corm in the proper conditions!

LOL!.......You are right!....A very stellar and trophy Nana!......Finally walkinbeam is back!.....
A couple of quotes from our forum member, very experienced musa expert, Rob (robguz24).....
"The most hearty, fast growing, and keiki (pup) producing cultivar I sell is Tu’u Ghia (or Gia). It is also one of the most delicious, with a somewhat cinnamon, very sweet taste and creamy texture. Where other bananas wither away, a Tu’u Ghia can be planted in the same spot and quickly take off and produce. I have had one plant begin to flower in only 6 months! Tu’u Ghia, along with Mysore and Gros Michel, is one of the types I encourage everyone to grow. The plant is also quite beautiful, with dark green color and red petiole edges."
"Extremely rare! ..Delicious!...One of my favorites!....A very interesting and beautiful plant. The large bunches have long, thin fingers. The fruit is purely sweet, with a floral, fruity, classic banana taste and without any tangy flavor. Texture is creamy and silky. Originally from Papua New Guinea. The
plant is disease resistant and puts out many keikis (pups)."

Would someone kindly explain the use of sand and bleach?
Valdus,
Check post 12, 15, 17, 21 on the thread......answers are there in detail....
1) The use of sand.....****Keyword*****AERATION!......I use pool filter silica coarse sand....It is not regular sand.....Pool filter silica coarse sand grits are bigger than regular/normal sand, therefore allows more oxygen to go to the corm, roots, etc.....Or you can use any type of "soilless mix" (sphagnum peat moss, rice hulls, coarse sand, perlite, etc.).....Also, weevils, nematodes hates any "soilless mix".....
2) The use of bleach......to sterilize the corm, plant or transplanting hole.....has been used in commercial plantations for years!.....
Hopefully it helps!......

*****An update is coming soon!*****:2723::bananarow::2723:
Maybe it's just me, but I had Paggi and mysore at the same time and nobody was eating the Mysore because the Paggi was so good. I don't even know what it tastes like fully yellow, none ever lasted that long. As soon as they fell off the bunch of their own accord, they were munched. Just wait until you taste it. Congrats on getting her into the earth.

The Tu'u Ghia is disease resistant so does that include viruses like bunchy top? We don't have banana diseases in my region so I'm not versed but interested in learning and promoting awareness.
Nothing's really immune to it. I've had at least 1 Tu'u Ghia get it. Poisoned it and others right next to it weren't infected. So who knows, maybe it's somewhat more resistant than other cultivars. It doesn't seem too bothered by corm weevils, nematodes, and other rot issues that affect a lot of my plants.

the eindecker was the first monoplane used for warefare in ww1. the cables not only held up the wings, they warped them for faster turns. it was so devastating that the enemy grounded all their planes till they could figure a way to deal with this monster. for a time the germans ruled the sky. later Fokker helped redesign the wings. I believe he put ailerons on.

Craig,
USDA TARS FHIA-1 Real Deal Goldfinger is a very strong and stout Nana plant!.....Grows about 6 to 8 1/2 ft before flowering, considering growing conditions!.....Mine is approx. 8 1/2 ft tall right now, at flowering!....She recovered very well from last year monster hurricane Irma.....Looks very similar to her family sibling, the SH-3640 High Noon Nana in growing characteristics, conditions, but SH-3640 High Noon grows a little bit taller!....

Bill
Bill,
I knew that was coming!......LOL.....Forum members, you guys can "chime in!"......This is just a couple of differences, it might be more......
TC Agristart FHIA-1 '"American Goldfinger" supposedly is a mutation of the original USDA TARS FHIA-1 "Real Deal" Goldfinger!.....TC FHIA-1 American Goldfinger was created by "accidentally" tissue culturing the original USDA TARS Goldfinger!....
USDA TARS FHIA-1 "Real Deal" Goldfinger flower bud has a heart shape!......It grows approx. 6 to 8 1/2 ft tall before it flowers/blooms.....Nana fruits are much bigger in size!....
TC Agristart FHIA-1 "American Goldfinger" might grow the same or a little bit taller, aprox. 8 to 10 ft before it flowers, blooms!.....Flower bud doesn't have a heart shape!.....Sometimes needs propping when flowering, blooming!......Nana fruits are smaller in size than the original USDA TARS Goldfinger!....
TC Agristart FHIA-1 "American Goldfinger" might not be the original Goldfinger but taste wise is a winner!.....You can ask forum members that are growing or tasted the TC FHIA-1 American Goldfinger, in specially my bro Ty (Tytaylor77)......It is one of his favorite Nanas!....

Awesome explanation My bro Hector! He stated the 3 major differences! First the main flower buds shape, fruit size, and pstem weakening after flowering. Before flowering it is a good stout plant. Just when it blooms it starts to weaken and can’t hold the bunch. Propping is a must!
Wow the agristarts are amazing! One of my favorites! So sweet and amazing. My top 3 for sure. It was my favorite before Patupi passed it!
I did a side by side test last year and was shocked when the Agristarts GF blew away the real deal in growth! I am comparing them again this year.
I hope it’s a huge bunch Hector! Congrats!! Nobody grows em like Hector!!!!

Is it just me or does your FHIA-01 male bud look very different then the one pictured in the identification and characterization pictures? Your bud looks long and slender when it should look short and wide.

Bill
Bill,
A very good question!......Right now it does look different, but supposedly as bracts and male flowers keeps falling off they should be getting smaller, therefore giving the shape or close/similar of a heart!.....It is very subjective of the variations of the size!....Remember you have to take into consideration the growing conditions, history of the plant, etc!....As I mentioned, she went thru a hell of a monster hurricane last year and a long winter!....She should perform, do better next time!....
It might not get to the same size of the picture of the Guide for the FHIA identification and characterization but so far she is showing indicators that what I'm growing it is the true USDA TARS FHIA-1 Real Deal Goldfinger!......Big heart shape or small heart shape its still a heart shape flower!.....And she is the only Nana Variety with that characteristic!.....Hopefully we will see at 60 nodes or early than that!....

It will be interesting to see if you male bud changes shape. The FHIA identification guide doesn't say anything about this. I would think if the flower bud changed shape as it grew the guide would discuss this. That seems like a unique characteristic that could easily identify FHIA-01.
I'm not trying to rain on your parade. I'm just skeptical.

Bill,
As the prior PM that I sent you, that member that I mentioned, trust me, his USDA TARS FHIA-1 Goldfinger in his collection it is the true to type!.....My bro Ty (Tytaylor77) and my USDA TARS FHIA-1 Goldfinger came from the same source!.....
*****Something that I would like to mention that it doesn't mentioned on The FHIA Guide, on that specific page, but you can see it clearly on their picture, but you didn't catch it, is the flower bud shape was observed at least at 30 nodes maybe more!*****Just look at the rachis on the picture or look at the picture that I sent you on the PM!.....As I mentioned, we will see at least at 60 nodes or probably earlier if it's the true USDA TARS FHIA-1 Real Deal Goldfinger what I'm growing!....My flower still on the 4 or 5 node!....
Thanks for asking the question!.....I totally agree!....It's good to be skeptical!....This is not an arguing contest!....And from my part it will end here!.....It is just a constructed learning experience, including for me!....

I hope you have the real deal.

Congrats Hector!! That sweetheart flower and bunch is going to be massive! I looked it up and I’m pretty sure I sent you the sweetheart pup In April 2017! They are such fast growers! Already flowering. I wish they filled a little quicker. I’m excited to see the bunch!
On the Goldfinger it’s impossible to tell if yours is the Tars/FHIA/Real deal or the TC Agristarts. I will say this:
- the peduncle is very green compared to my Agristarts clone.
- also the fingers are a little longer than mine.
It is very hard to even talk about comparing the male flower. The ID should be made 2-3 months from now! And the bud will shorten a lot.
Buds change a lot! Think about when they first turn down and open! They are sooo long! As they open and form the hands they get shorter and smaller! As they continue making endless and endless male flowers they will change in shape and size!
Some AA types like VC, Nino, others will end up tiny little buds! I’m talking 2” long! When they started over a foot long!
I can’t say it’s for sure the Tars clone yet, but to me it’s looking that way. Hector didn’t get it from me. Rather a different source. I have received many that we’re not correct. Mostly TC plants. If your talking about my Musa cocos that was 11’ tall and taller than my Highgate. I received it from a trade and not direct! So being the 3rd person to get it, can’t say which of the 2 people before me could have messed up!
I respect everyone’s opinion! It will be fun to watch what the bud does!

Hector
When are you thinking of taking the bracing off Tu'u Ghia,do you also think it might have been better to put a temporary clear plastic cover on praying hands while it was in the ground to keep the rain off, saving you the hassle of lifting it out of the ground.
I have had moment's like that "praying hands" when you think you might have lost the plant as the whole p-stem rots away only to see a remarkable recovery.

Mushtaq,
Thanks for the very good questions and suggestions my friend!......I will wait for Tu'u Ghia to grow more taller and the temporary brace will come off!....I have observed that most AA Nana Varieties are kind of weak, fragile when they are small....Also, another factor is Tu'u Ghia was a TC plant when I acquired....Right now, she is getting stronger, robust, thicker as she keeps open new leaves!....
Good call!....That is another very good option to leave it on the ground and cover it!....But I have observed and it's in my case, that corms roots faster and push out leaves more quick in pots (controlled environment) than on the ground!....

Woooohooooo my bro! Amazing. Seeing your Tu’u ghia makes me wanna go beat mine with a stick!! Mine is pushing a lot faster now. Just had to get going I guess.
Wow sweetheart bunch is amazing! Sweetheart is one of my favorite Musa to grow! It is so fast and with pruning I can actually get it about a month away from being filled! I have a new idea for the sweetheart I will try this winter! But even if I can never get fully filled fruit here ai will be happy just watching my sweethearts grow every year! Nothing like it!
So sorry about the goldfinger. I figured yours was 100% real because I know your source has the real deal goldfinger. This makes me wonder if ALL the “Real” Goldfinger out there are fakes or off-types! Crazy! I think I know a source though! I’m working on it as we speak!
Great job as always Hector! Always love your updates!!!

Ty bro,
Tu'u Ghia it's an amazing grower, performer!....Since I transplanted her to the ground she hasn't stop growing, pushing out leaves like there is not tomorrow!.....It's incredible!....
FHIA-3 Sweetheart is definitely a "Monster Grower!".....She went thru a hell of a storm last year (very bad girl monster hurricane Irma), then thru a long winter, that seems that never ended!....She recovered and it's performing flawlessly!.....As you mentioned, nothing like it!.....It's amazing!.....
Don't worry about the FHIA-1 Goldfinger!....It's all good bro!.....

Thank you Mike!.....Indeed!.....It's a monster SH-3640!......

Very similar to FHIA-1 Goldfinger and I bet to the FHIA-18 Bonanza too!.....SH-3640 resembles the Brazilian Nana in taste!.....Just a little bit creamier!.....
HMelendez,
Do you adjust your nutrient/fertilizer application after the plant puts up a flower or do you keep it consistent during the life of the plant?
Looking awesome! Thanks!
Thank you Akula!......I adjust the fertilizer (Urea/Potash) application accordingly but I keep consistently applying nutrients to the mats, amending the Nanas with coffee grounds, egg shells, fruit peelings, biochar (crushed wood charcoal), vegetable remainings/peelings, old Nana leaves, etc.......

great pics there hector. happy to see you got your tars goldfinger at long last.
just a suggestion, don't know if you want it or not; septic paper at the bottom of your pot. its more thin than tissue paper. roots can grow thru it. lets water runs thru it, will not hold it back. holds sand back. not biodegradable but tears easily when wet. will dry out at the holes. you can get it at home depot or lows for pennies, you can buy it by the foot. they call it nylon septic fabric. you look online and they sell it by the 1500 ft roll. but you can buy it by the ft. at the store, 10 ft. would do a hundred pots. just put down 1 layer.

Woooooohoooooo looking so good my bro! Your doing such an awesome job! All your plants are looking amazing!
My Vunamami is about a foot tall now! Growing great! I will try to put a pic of it on my Flickr. Nick is a master at TCing plants! Anytime he offers any for sale, get them!! I’m hoping I can continue to keep my Vun alive! I’m excited to see how it does! I have heard bad results from many guys growing it and how hard it is to grow. It is for sure different!
Amazing job my bro! Amazing French Red! You know it’s one of my favorites!!!

What's the difference between pool silica sand and the white sugar sand thats all over S. Florida's coasts? My sister has a house in W. Palm Beach and her backyard seems like its primarily composed of what people from around here would call "beach sand".
Also I was instructed that banana plants favor soil that is high in organic matter and amended my soil accordingly. Obviously you are a successful grower and your technique works but how to reconcile?
Thanks!

Donald,
From post #193 of the thread......."That is pool filter silica coarse sand!......The soilless medium that I used for Nanas in pots or in the ground!....Has a bigger grit than normal/regular sand!....Keywords DRAINAGE and AERATION!".......
Very simple!.....I frequently keep amending/adding nutrients to the top soil of my Nana mats!.....Biochar (crushed wood charcoal), coffee grounds, egg shells, vegetable/fruits peelings, Nana leaves or pieces from prior harvested Nanas, etc.....
I first tried pool filter silica coarse sand with the Beautiful, Royal and Majestic AEAE and it did worked!......Trust me, AEAE is one of the toughest Nana Varieties to grow and see it flowering, blooming!.......If it works for the AEAE, it should work for most Nana Varieties!......Right now, I'm using pool filter silica coarse sand with all my Nanas!.....http://www.bananas.org/f2/beautiful-royal-majestic-ae-ae-flowering-47512.html

The green garden tape it's just to hold a small brace.......As Tu'u Ghia has been growing, I removed a bigger bamboo stick brace that I had before!....Now I just have this small wood brace stake it to the ground, using a piece of very thick electrical cord!....I'm using this small brace to keep Tu'u Ghia in place, straight up, so she doesn't lean to one side as before!....Eventually, I will remove the brace, until Tu'u Ghia gets much bigger, stronger!.....

Per the first study, Kandrian with 826 days harvest cycling time has a harvest index (HI) twice Namwa! That doesn't seem accurate but I'm not familiar with Kandrian bunch size. Are they 2-3x Namwa?

HMelendez, I haven't read the entire thread but the last page 5 and page 1. I'm still confused how these plants will grow in 100% pool silica sand. Are you supplying all of the nutrients via liquid? Doesn't that get expensive? Also in post #31 there are some bananas showing the rootballs and it looks like normal soil, not the white silica sand I see your bananas that are in the pots in the same post. If you could clarify, that would help greatly.

HMelendez, also how do you make those clear dome extensions? Do you just buy the dome and cut out the top to stack them? How do you seal it so water doesn't evaporate through the cracks?

Kanana,
Thanks for seeing, following the thread!.....This is from post #202 and #203 of the thread!...

Also, in reply to the post #31, it looks like normal soil, but trust me, it isn’t!.....It is a soilless medium/mix!.......A mix of sphagnum peat moss, perlite and pool filter silica coarse sand!....

Yeah, this was perplexing to me too! Everything I have read and/or instructions emphasize organic content of soil and then Hector shows up with beautuful, healthy, full size plants grown in pool filter sand!!
I guess the pool filter sand allows the roots to branch out faster in addition to allowing water to drain better to counteract the large volume of rainfall we get in Florida. I have noticed some of my plants in soil with high organic content have "floated" up over the season due to soil saturation which makes them vulnerable to toppling by wind.
I wonder if Hector's technique works in soil that is highly acidic or salty i.e. main corn planted in a hole of his mix but with surrouding soil highly acidic or salty?

Ok, well I must have missed or didnt read yet in that lengthy thread, that you used your own soiless mix of sphagnum peat moss, perlite and silica sand. I was under the impression you used ONLY 100% silica sand.
So do you first start the smaller pots in YOUR soiless mix and let it grow in that, until it needs repotting, then add it to those much larger pots with 100% silica sand? Reason I ask is those large pots look like 100% silica sand as it is pure white. Perhaps you just cover the tops of those large pots with 100% silica sand instead of your mix?
Lastly, with your mix, do you use 1/3 of each part for your mix? Thanks so much. Your success with your bananas is something I'd like to duplicate.

Is it completely sealed, ie. any leakage?
Clear packing tape or scotch tape?
Also what's the best way to cut it so they stack? Using a box cutter blade?
Does the second tier stack without the tape or is the tape crucial for structural integrity?
I wish they designed them from the get go to be able to stack as you have done, similar to the worm bins that stack allowing you to buy each extra level and they are made to stack.

One more thing HMelendez, maybe I should have PMed you instead of posting here, but for the sake of other people wanting to make these expandable domes I figured it is relevant to the thread. Best I can find price wise on Amazon is a 10 pack of the 7" humidity domes for $49.99. Were you able to get a better deal than that? Seems pricey for what it is. Having said that, I'm pretty sure I paid more than that when I bought mine several years ago. Just seems expensive for a clear piece of plastic... $5 each???

I use waterproof clear tape from Home Depot, but regular clear tape will do the trick too!.....Trust me, it's completely seal!......In all the tiers (clear plastic humidity domes) you need to use tape on them for structural integrity!....You can use a normal scissor to cut the top off so they can stack!.....
