to raising Banana Plants and to this Forum!! I started with one plant last Spring (was given to me by a friend)...It increased with 5 Pups. I dug them up the day before a freeze here and put them in my building behind my house. I seperated the Pups before storing them.
My Buddy gave me more Plants this Spring ( 14 pups) and now I have around 20 Plants,I have 12 of them potted, so they will have good roots before I plant them later, this is a very addicting hobby !!
I really don't know what Cultivar they are, but he called them plantation Bananas?? I will send Photos when they really start growing good and maybe someone here will know what they are..

Welcome to the group! I was also new to bananas until early last year. I moved into a house with a stand of what I know now are Dwarf Orinocos. I went to check out Going Bananas which is not far from me and got hooked on the taste...now my problem is finding space to put all the bananas I am interested in tasting!

Sounds like you have a generous friend and some beautiful instant landscape.
Does your friend leave his in the ground through the winter? You maybe able to in your zone(8?).
Keep the posts coming, and I'll look forward to any pics.

Thanks for the replies!!! Yes, my Friend is very Generous, he's has Banana Plants coming out his Ears...LOL..He owns a Mobile Home Court and plants them all over the area,so he gets alot of Increase. He digs them up each year, and gives the excess away...... we are in Zone 7 A-B. Will show Photos later when they are not so Raggedy!

Hi,
I saw your pictures on the ID forum. Do you know anything from your friends experience? Has he had fruit? Did they freeze out w/ the first cold weather last winter? The stems don't look quite right, but I'd guess Orinoco if your buddy has gotten bananas. Yours look healthy enough that you should have a LOT of pups soon:)
Happy growing!

My buddy digs his up each year and stores them. He had one to fruit last year but I don't think it had enough time to ripen. I will find out more about them later ,but I really don't think he knows alot about them. I will submit more photos later as the season goes on. I kept my biggest plant in my unheated Bldg. behind my house,no damage at all, through the Winter. Now that I have several plants, I will experiment with mulching a few plants for Winter.....Thanks for the reply!

Hey Frank if your buddy ever has any excess and needs to find a place for them, we have lots of room out here in Oregon. I started growing bananas last year and yes it is very adicting. Still waiting for my first fruits though. If he said they were plantation bananas they could be dwarf cavendish or maybe goldfingers. Let me know how you're doing with them.

Yeah they sure are addicting. I just started growing them this year and I already have 14 different varieties. I would get more but I don't have any more room plus the wife thinks I'm going crazy.LOL
