Hi everyone! I have recently purchased a Ensete ventricosum 'Maurellii' and would like to have more than one, but do not want to buy more. I have read that these do not produce pups, but can be forced to pup by damaging the corm. I have also read that the corm can be divided into halves or quarters as a method of propagation. Has anyone successfully propagated this species using any of these methods?

I haven't done that variety, but with a banana that propagates by suckering, you can cut the corm up, similar to a potato, and the various "eyes" with root and sprout. I have done this a couple times with ones such at Thousand Fingers.

When you divide the corm on your thousand fingers do you divide anywhere or is are there certain spots on the corm, for instance, where peepers can be seen? On the Ensete, as you know, there are no peepers so there would not be a spot where you could see any "eyes" like on a potato correct? Thanks.

Yes, I split it according to between the "eyes". Doesn't help much to split an "eye" in half.

There was a guy who said that his E.ventricosum rotted down in the winter, so he split it up and it pupped.
If you are able to check out some of the old posts on the UKoasis. There was a guy there that made pups regularly(with mixed results), but basically you want to get it a big as possible, then hollow out the corm until it is close(for easy pup division) to the roots. It(the corm) will fill up with water, and you'll have to dump it or it will rot. Or leave it on it's side if in pot.
Then it will get crusty, and callused, and will grow pups.
Good luck. I'd like to see some pics of the process, but I'll do it too if I have the time this summer.

That is an intresting way of doing it. I will post picks when I split it up.

This seems to agree with what Tropicallvr said above: http://www.tropentag.de/2004/proceedings/node186.html
