OK - most cold-hardy prize in my experience goes to A. arborescens. It is also shade-tolerant and fairly quick-growing.

the hardiest one is supposedly A. polyphylla. There are several that are good into the upper teens with no damage, like A. vera (the true species), A. saponaria and a couple others I can't think of.
