We at Manini Mountain are thrilled to announce that the Banana Gods bestowed upon us the The Coolest Banana Ever and we are hoping that this great banana society here can help us with naming our new cultivar. It's always exciting to find new mutations in the banana groves but more importantly they need to be stable and exhibit some type of superior characteristics. Thankfully this banana checks all the boxes. Some mutations are a one in a million chance but that is what makes our banana society here collectively so great. Whether you grow one banana or a few hundred thousand bananas on your banana plantation everyone here is an integral part because with each additional banana grown our odds of bringing the WORLD the next great banana cultivar increases.

This new unnamed cultivar will be distributed free of charge to some members of the International Banana Society for further evaluations and then to the entire society. It would be ideal if we have any members in South Florida willing to help with the evaluations and distribution of The Coolest Banana Ever.

This new cultivar is an Extra Dwarf or Super Dwarf with an ABB genotype and is part of the Awak subgroup. Blooming height is under 4 feet and it produces a large bunch of Ladyfinger bananas.

Thanks in advance for your help. :goteam:

Keith, I was hoping you would make a thread on the existence of this new plant. Thank you!

Now if your looking for a grower slightly Northwest of South Florida you could count me in on the evaluation of the new plant.

Very interesting.
I would be extremely interested in getting hold of one to grow out
Here in central Florida.
Many varieties do surprising well in the cool winters.

i had a dwarf pup on one of my plants and waited to see what its (the dwarfed one)pup might look like.
it lived in a small container though and that was the cause of the small size
i transplanted to a bigger container and its pup quickly grew to the same size as the mother plant. so no new type for me...

congrats on observing and isolating a new type!

I would be interested in growing one of the sample in South Georgia (zone 8b: micro 9a) for evaluation. In the past few weeks, I found my Truely Tinys love cool weather. The best they look all year is when the night temps were dropping into the 50°s and day time temps were running in the low 70°s. And, the few nights the temps dopped into the mid 30°s, the Tinys weren't phased by the cold. ... I bet your new plant will like cooler temps.

I guess I could test it's resistance to disease... :D

Mininam or Namini for names. as it is a mini Namwah or Namwah mini

Both are cool names, but preferably I'd like to stay away from names referring to Nam Wa. I grow many Pisang Awak cultivars and calling them all Nam Wa would not distinguish them from each other, that's the reason I didn't want to use the names 'Super Dwarf Nam Wa' or 'Extra Dwarf Nam Wa'.

On the Org most members call every Pisang Awak cultivar either a Dwarf Nam Wa or a Tall Nam Wa, but the subgroup is much more diverse than that.

With that said, either of those names are acceptable.

If you have so many awak types, put them on ebay so I can buy them.

Since you are an experienced Musa scientist I’m sure you will be submitting all 3 new clones for gene sequencing. It is amazing what can be done now days! Sequence variations of mutations are easily observed in the lab. The amino acid sequences of the longest ORF almost always shows changes in seven amino acids such as arginine, glutamine, alanine, aspartic acid, isoleucine, phenylalanine and asparagine to serine, leucine, proline, alanine, valine, tyrosine and serine respectively.

Check with Gabe! He is the expert and can point you in the correct direction. You can even patent them! If not, the first person with them in hand could beat you to it! Then you could have to pay them to be able to sell it next year! I’m sure you plan to sell ALOT! After the gene sequencing of course! Which I’m sure you will post the results here! To not doing so would make it look like your trying to trick members. Say $150 a plant! The test would pay for themselves fast! For the patent I would recommend council asap! It’s easy! I’ve done it before!

Out of the entire world trying to force mutations with PCRs and radiation it is amazing you had 3 in one year! Like you said 1 in a million. I would even say trillion! Unbelievable!! Congrats! Simply unbelievable!!:ha::ha:
