On 11/1/17, I drenched the potting medium of this musa 'Truly Tiny' with 25 ppm uniconazole (that's a large dose). If and when its leaf roll stops emerging from its pseudostem, I will cut off the pseudostem about 3" from its base to allow room for shortened growth to emerge. I expect to know whether to cut it in about one month. I expect the experiment to take about 6 months.

The nearest plant in the photo is the experimental subject on 11/8/17:

The possible outcomes are:

A. No effect
B. Slightly shortened
C. Greatly shortened
D. The plant dies before it is shortened
E. None of the above

To produce a low rack? There's no point on a dwarfing variety. I have seen this done with tall varieties. I wouldn't torture my plants in that manner.

1. I would reserve the word "torture" for sentient beings. Do you think banana plants are sentient?

2. I have seen some tall varieties of muse shortened so much with the PGR, Ancymidol, that they look more like bromeliads than banana plants. That's shorter than any untreated dwarf variety such as Truly Tiny.

3. In the event that C. happens, it will be evidence that uniconazole is more than a GA antagonist because I previously established that Truly Tiny is insensitive to GA. If uniconizole is only an antagonist of GA, the likely outcome will be A, or B.. This experiment is more about the properties of uniconazole than the plant.

You keep doing you. I will continue to do what I do.

Steve,

What supplemental lighting will you be using to grow out your plants over the winter months.

I haven't decided. If I do, it will probably be an LED light that I built. I have 48" x 3.5" x 1/8" aluminum bars, each with 25 "3W" LEDs installed. I normally use 4 of these in a growth chamber, but, they can easily be converted to spotlights by clipping on "lenses" (actually reflectors but they are sold as "lenses") to the LEDs.

It should be interesting to see the outcome and how it all comes together.

My guess will be an unusually bushy short plant with more pups than you know what to do with.

Might have to rename the plant a Teacup short and stout.:)

I was hoping for that result (C) but, right now, my best guess is (A) no effect, because the speed of leaf roll emergence does not seem to be decreasing nor have the leaves turned darker green. On plants that are shortened by uniconazole, the leaves, including old leaves, usually turn darker green within one week of application.

Correction, my bars are 48" x 3" x 1/8." I have some older bars that are 2.5." You can see some of them here:

What do you suppose would happen, if I treated the uniconazole treated one on the left with gibberellic acid?
