I purchased an Ice cream banana plant four years ago. Kept it in a pot indoors for three years, it was getting to tall so moved it outside last summer. Leaves did not look very good late summer to fall. I did nothing to prepare for winter and looks much better this year. We live about two miles from the ocean so stays very mild, summer high temps are usually in mid 60s and lows in the 50s, winter highs are 40s to 50s and lows in mid to upper 30s but can drop into the upper 20s a few times a year.

My main question is should I do any kind of maintenance to prepare for winter? This banana plant also has two pups that just appeared within the last two weeks, one is about eight inches tall and the other about twelve. Should I try to remove and pot these or will they survive winter?

Sorry I don't have a specific answer to your question, but instead I have a question for you. I am about to start growing an Ice Cream banana plant myself. Need to start in a pot too.

Did your plant provide fruit while in the pot? Also how large/tall was it in the pot?

Thanks,
Jason

you need to put your hardiness zone not your zip. it will help people out with questions you have. it is under your location, you should be 8b.

No it didn't fruit while in the pot but I did have it indoors and probably didn't get enough light for it to produce fruit. It got to about 10 feet, may have gotten taller if left indoors.
Last year was when I planted it outdoors and it went through some stress in the transition so I'm hoping it will fruit next summer.

Thanks for your reply! Good luck with your banana plant.
