So far, it's not so bad here in Palm Bay in central east coast Florida. I woke up to my only banana casualty so far, the Brazilian broke in half. My 2 Namwah are staked (One I did this morning in the pouring rain.) I do not know if it will help or not. Depends a lot on the track of the storm and direction of the wind.
I hope everyone is safe and dry as well as their bananas have steel pseudostems set in concrete for the next 36 hours.

Glad to hear it Steve. I've been seeing twister warning all day over by Melbourne. East coast seems to be getting it worse with the wind coming off the ocean.
Over here it looks like things are breaking up quickly, might only be Cat 1 by the time it gets to me.
Things we sounding sketchy down by Nicolas, for the past few days they were warning about the levee busting. Then late last night or early this morning (I forget which) an official said the level was low enough that there wouldn't be a breach.

South (West) Georgia: Winds are picking up; currently 30 mph w/ gust up to 40 mph. Max. wind is predicted at 45/50 mph about 1:00 pm. There is not a lot of rain in area; most is to the East. ... I think Irma is starting to break up and the cold front a few days ago may be the cause. The winds are cold; current temp is about 66 deg F.
So far at 9:30 am, my Nanas, ducks, chickens, and cats are OK.

I remember riding out Camille in 1969 a cat 5 storm in the same house I live in now. I'm 100 miles from the coast, so most storms will have lost strength when it gets to me. It takes a direct at St. Marks, Fl for full hurricane force winds to get to me. ... But we do get a lot of trees down and power outages due to poor planing by the county and power company. ... My power has been out since 9.35 am this morning.
Florida just wore Irma (the bitch) out. Thanks guys for the buffering.

What is a black jack?

What is a black jack?
a black jack is a poor quality oak tree that rots easily, prone to fall, not very pretty, etc. but its worth its weight in gold if you have a big hog cooker. it will compete with the taste of some good fresh hickory. least ways I will have lots of ash to feed the naners. if its a cooking banana do you let the coals go out?
the winds first came from the east, the ended up coming from the sw. when they came from the sw they loosened up a big white oak enough it was leaning over the dining room. so yesterday afternoon I brought out ropes and a come along, pulled over and very slowly dropped it. 5 trees. very fortunate it did not fall, very fortunate.

We lost all 25 racemes of developing bananas here in Sarasota. The whole mat of Sabas came crashing down. I've never had he Sabas fall before - but the wind direction was just right this time, I suppose. All the mats of Blue Java fell along with the Red kru, ARH, Ele Ele, French Red, and Iholenas. We had our large royal Poinciana, Guanabana, and Jacaranda uprooted. Very grateful to have sustained no structural damage. My husband installed two cisterns with pumps after the 16" of rainfall we had one night 2 weeks ago and lost the white sapotes and avocados ...and our Orange Sherbert mango. Pumps worked very well at moving the water outback into the drainage system up front.
The great thing about bananas is It's never a total loss (except for the fruit that was hanging.

Just got power restored early this morning. Nana's, among others, took a beating with the 90 mph gusts. The plants listed quite a bit and lost much of the upper growth. Trimmed then uprighted them. Tied to fence for now but need better long-term idea for holding them upright.
Hope everyone else is ok after Irma.

Them leaning and a few leaf stems breaking is what kept the pstems from breaking. Leaves will regrow quickly. And, if the ground is still soft the pstem can be set upright. ... If the plant was tie-off at mid height (similar to photo), the pstem would have broken just above the tie.

You think they will need support for much longer?

Just 2-3 weeks Orly. They just need time to regrow roots that were pulled out or snapped.

3 weeks is awesome. :08: I thought it would be months. The next fertilization is due in 2 weeks. Should I do it then as scheduled or put it off a little longer?
Thx

Be sure to tamp the soft ground around the corm firm. Once the ground dries out some, you may be able to remove the supports then. But 1 1/2 weeks to 2 weeks should be good. ... I just pushed a few of my plants up-right and tighten up the ground on the weak side with my foot.

Still no power here. First time on my phone. All my big bananas snapped in half and all that had bunches fell over. Two namwah bunches only a month old no good. One Brazilian Bunch 3 months old probably no good they take 6 months or more. Only one that made it was 3640 and it was leaning hard. I uprighted it it's still growing a new Leaf. I think it is near flowering don't know what that will end up being like. It seems like everytime I get a bunch of bananas something happens to them

Man Steve that stinks man!! EVERYONE I know in South and Central Florida lost EVERY bunch they had!! I'm just happy you and your family is safe and hopefully no damage to your property!
I hope you get power back fast! Put those Brazilians in a trash bag with a few apples. They will Yellow up fast! On premature bunches I find the faster you force ripening the better. Most times just hanging them they will turn black before yellow and dry on the inside.
Let me know if you need anything!

First off, I hope that everyone who went through Irma has made it through without harm. I'm in the south part of Miami and didn't get the worst of it, but it's my first hurricane experience after living here just a few years, so it was a bit scary.
After making sure everyone in my family was safe, next thing was to check on the bananas. Pretty much all had the leaves shredded, so I trimmed the leaves but most of the plants seem fine. In the few days since, they seem to be growing new leaves just fine.
There were two taller mysores that are near the height of my first one when it produced fruit. I've been keeping an eye out for the flag leaf and flower on those for a while, but they haven't come yet. Both plants had bent in half, so I had to take a machete and cut below the bend, expecting that those ones were lost. But about two days later I noticed they were still growing, and one had grown several inches. I've got pics of it here. The pics are from yesterday and as of this morning I'd say the part is extending about 18 inches and kind of curving around a bit more than in the pics.

From what it looks like, is there a chance it can still push out a viable bunch? The spot where it's cut off is just about 6 feet high. My concern would be supporting the weight of the bunch, so is there something I can do to give it extra support?

If the bloom was/is still in the lower part of the plant, it will and just be shorter. If it was pushing and in the top part you cut off, no; but can .still make pups for you

It peeled back the roof on my garage but I picked up the shingles and put them back on other than that our house was fine. Still no power Friday afternoon. Looks like there's another one taking aim at us again. A lot of mine broke off and had to be cut and they look very similar to what you see above. I only had one that might have had a bloom pushing up through the PS but I do not know yet. Also, Ty... thanks for that bit of info on ripening. I will try it. They been on my porch since Sunday. (Yes, I was in my yellow Disney poncho and green hat cutting it off and propping the Namwah that was left but snapped during the hurricane.)

There was a hole in the innermost part that's poking out (you can probably see in the zoomed in picture, although not sure if it's clear), so I think that is just an ordinary leaf, but not sure. I'm still relatively new at this, so would I be able to tell if the part with the bloom had been chopped off, like will the part growing from the middle look different? Obviously if in a week I see the flower emerge, I'll know it's good :goteam:
Any advice on supporting the weight, or should it be okay as it is? I was thinking some kind of improvised brace for that section, but maybe some others have some experience with this.
As far as pups, there are already a few coming up, so I'm not too worried there. Just was eager to get this next bunch since it's so close, rather than having to wait a while for the next ones to grow! I imagine most bananas in South Florida will be set back a little bit.
Thanks for the info!

I don't see any evidence of a bloom/bud being pushed. I don't think the plant is ready. ... A bud pushing though the pstem will cause a noticeable bulge; more at the top when it is emerging. ... As far as the weight and support, let's wait and see if a support is needed. Do a search of the forum for banana supports. there are several threads and pictures on how to build using PVC.

We were told to get out as it was a mandatory evacuation. I know how fickle hurricanes can be. After being stuck in Hurricane Charlie- was a cat 2 hanging off Sanibel and pushing surge in so was bagging sand- and the sudden change to Cat 4 and speed causing us to have to ride out the eye of the storm- we said no more! This time we went to Tampa hoping Irma would lose steam. We were fortunate that it did as it was forecast to hit our neighborhood as a Cat 4 with 20 ft of storm surge. Our house would have had water over the roof! Thanks for all of the prayers because that storm took a jog, went overland losing steam. Sorry that Keys, Marco, Naples, Bonita, and the Miami area took the brunt of it and flooded peoples homes. Prayers are now for a speedy recovery for both Florida and Texas.
Lost vegetation. Lost my beautiful mango tree. Will likely have to replace lanai cage and screen. shed blew up! Lost a moringa tree. Good thing I cut down the 50 ft ficus this Summer! Oh, well! Time to replant and landscape anew.
Cut the bananas back and they have sprouted again.
Special thanks to all of the the great work Governor Scot and his staff did, and the great work by power companies and FEMA, NL Guard, Coast Guard, and especially the selfless volunteers!! Did I miss anyone? Those prayers, too!
Later!

my place is sand, ground water is 9 ft. had water 2 to 3 inches my whole yard. staid wet for 2 days. anyways a lot of mine bent over not so much from broken roots but soggy soil. I tied the worst ones upright and after a week I loosened some ropes. the soil had dried and the plants are doing fine.

Yeah pretty much the same situation here. I'll untie mine in another week or two. They are throwing new leaves so that's good.

Probably the worst part of the deal is that the grass and weeds have gone off to the races with the canopy being gone.
By the way, the new plantain planting had dried out some when I got home on 9/30, but we had like 6" of rain last week so it is underwater again. Seems to be holding on surprisingly well.
