I have had this Cali Gold a few weeks. It has been in my hoop house. The soil is a soil-less mix with a little extra perlite and a small amount of shredded pine bark. The pot is a 3 gallon nursery pot. I watered it in with a little liquid seaweed when I potted it but it hasn't had any additional water. The soil is moist but not at all wet. I noticed a dark, wet area this morning. If I press on it water comes out freely. It has a new leaf coming out that looks good. Things seem to happen so quickly with bananas I want to get advice about this before I kill it. I have a picture but don't know how to post it here. The dark, wet spot is just below where the banana was cut off for shipping, and on the outside of the plant.

Remove anything and everything that is black/brown and mushy.

I have had this Cali Gold a few weeks.

Keep in mind that it is probably plain Orinoco and not the Cali Gold cultivar.

Thanks, Richard, but I know who I got this from and I'm sure it is Cali Gold. I understand why you say that but this one is the real deal.

HarveyC could verify that for you.

Thanks, but I don't think that is necessary. I just want to keep it alive.

I can verify she has the real Cali Gold!

Honestly the only difference I can find is the height of the Cali Gold is 1-2' shorter ALWAYS! than the TC dwarf Orinoco. Both are excellent producers! And taste exactly the same. If you don't have any benefit of a slightly shorter plant I prefer the DO. Cali gold comes so close to choking as the bud emerges.

Cali Gold, like Texas Star we're B.S. to begin with. The latter was offered a few years before this site began by an enterprising grower who knew that there were people desperate enough to pay money for a banana that might grow in their yard. California Gold came a few years later from a seller in the SF Bay area with the same strategy -- who now disgraced no longer comes to this site. But back in the day was selling pups on eBay for hundreds of dollars. I've seen both Orinoco and "Cali Gold" growing side-by-side in USDA zones 9a through 10b. Same plant, same fruit. And it's not a very good fruit. Why anyone grows either is beyond my tastes.
