I am new to the group and hope to learn a lot. I have been trying to grow bananas for several years in Indiana, zone 6. Of course, they do well in the summer but I have trouble getting them through the winter. I seem to lose some every year. Right now I have a Dwarf Green, Iholena, Basjoo, RajaPuri, and I just received a Cali Gold. And I have just ordered Viente Cohol. I used to work with a woman that lived in southern Indiana and grew bananas for years. She told me that they had fruit every summer. They would plant them in the spring and then dig them up in the fall, wintering them in cardboard boxes in their basement. I don't have a basement so I have been trying to keep them in a cool upstairs room over the winter, but it has been pretty hit or miss. They seem to just dry up. But I am determined to figure out a way to make it work!

Welcome from Virginia.
Some of the members wrap them up for the winter.

I used to keep them in Illinois, so I understand how long those winters are. They will dry out. I kept mine in buckets with some of their dirt and roots and gave them a small amount, like a cup, of water every month beginning around Jan 1. If I didn't water them, I would lose some to drying out. Too much and they will rot. Or, you could put them in a sunny spot in more dirt and give them a little more water. They will grow a few leaves but it doesn't seem to give them any advantage once you put them outside.
