While searching for a high nitrogen fertilizer for my Musa's, I found Urea prills which is listed as 46-0-0. Is this safe for the Musa's and at what rate would I apply.

Read the info for fertilizer in the forum wiki for more detailed explanation. Info:Fertilizer - Bananas Wiki (http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Info:Fertilizer)

But to answer your question 'How much 46-0-0 to apply?' Nitrogen in this concentration can more easily burn the plant roots if too much is applied. ... Mature banana plant only need 1 lb of nitrogen per year (or growing season). At 46%, only a little more than 2 lbs 'total' (1 lb / 46% = 2.17 lb) is needed for the growing season and this to be divided equally (5 or 6 mths ??) and applied monthly.

My self I just use 10-10-10 garden mix (tomato) fertilizer ($10 per 50 lb). It has the minor elements garden plants & bananas need. Then supplement with potassium sulfate for the extra potassium needed.

Need more detail about your plants for an answer,,,,,
Plant /mat size /how old and big.

I use(46) at home and at work ..Using good gardening practices.

A great alternative which I also use for Basjoos is Triple 19. (https://flic.kr/s/aHskkER8ZQ)
Follow the link for more pics of basjoos .
This fert (trip 19) is also great choice for lawns and landscape plants ....... dual purpose for less cost

46-00 will kill, destroy, weaken any plant if not properly used

You have to know what your doing and know how your plants will react to this powerful fert!!!! Not recommended for a less experienced gardener or mixing with diesel fuel.

I would go the 19-19-19- route if you can get it..........if you cannot find trip 19, trip 16 ,13,12,will give you awesome growth also..
Skip the 46 for now if possible......but it sure does work well.

Wal Mart has pretty big bags of 12-0-12 for 7 bucks, at least here in Florida.

The 'big' bags at my locate WalMart are 20lb or 40 lb size; and the price/lb is a little more than double the price I pay from farm supply stores or the local fertilizer stores for 50 lb bags.

And, ... Young growing banana plant still need some phosphorus for root development.

I figured that, since I use a lot of manure and compost plus piles of green grass clippings, they will have plenty of P. It's not like bananas need all that much. I try to grow mostly if not all organically, without man made chemical fertilizers. I worry more about not having weed killers and bug killers on my plants than chemical fertilizers, though.
