Hello, new here, forgive me if I use the wrong terms, but I have a banana that has produced a stalk with no flowers whatsoever inside. I don't know the type, but it is a fruit producing variety. Why would this happen? I also have one that only produced 2 hands and then nothing, just flowers.

It is more common than most people think. The flower stalk usually has only male flowers or small female fingers that drop/abort.

It's usually caused by lack of water or fertilizer during the plants lifetime. I've also seen some do this after being abused for a year or 2 but then cared for correctly towards the end of their cycle (last year, etc)

I know a neighbor who had a tall Orinoco in a pot for a couple years then planted in ground and he went all out careing for the plant! It still grew to about 8' and flowered with all male flowers.
The daughter pup bloomed last year with a beautiful bunch! This makes me think that its some kind of environmental issue and there is nothing wrong with the actual clone or planting material!

A picture would help verify.

hflock -- is the stalk with no flowers still producing leaves?

If you mean the green leaves, no, no yet. It just sent up the flower stalk last week.

Click the upload link in the photo gallery and select the file on your computer. MAKE sure the file is less than 5200k in size, or you will need to re-size the photo to less than 5200k.

So you have a flower stalk ... is there an unopened bud on the end of it?

Reply to edwmax, tried to upload, read the post on how to, but it won't load for whatever reason.
Reply to Richard, the bud on the end of the flower stalk is opening, but there are no flowers.

Hi hflock, have you tried the bananas from your plant or did someone tell you it was a producing variety? If you look at other people's banana plant pictures does your plant look the same?

My neighbor has an Orinoco plant in his front yard that produced only a few hands and the bud was very small. His banana plants never get any food so maybe that is the problem for small hands or no fruit.

Keep trying to post the pictures. Try one picture at a time. If you can get the pictures into the Gallery someone can help you put the pictures in the post.

Good luck Susan:goteam:

I have had 1 that produced a nice bunch, but before they ripened, we moved and had to cut the stalk since we took it with us. We now have a second banana producing a very nice bunch. I assume they are edible as I doubt anyone here in Mexico would plant anything else.

Be patient :)
