Tall namwah that is 2 years old with a pstem height of 7 feet. Over wintered in the garage by wrapping the rootball in a trash bag with dampened burlap inside. Was placed back in the ground beginning of April.

Thanks. It's the one you sold me. I plan on trying to take a picture everyday . It's going to be our first flowering banana ever :goteam:

Actually, my Namwah is exactly the same today. How long do they usually take to ripen? Will be taking pics tomorrow for sharing and such.

Do you intend to over winter it this winter inside or out?
When you wrapped it up for the winter last year did you cut all the leaves off and keep the p-stem intact?

In the late November I dug out the plant, wrapped the rootball with very wet burlap then wrapped the burlap with a trash bag and laid it down in the garage and then in the end of March I put it back in the ground in the same hole. Through the winter I throw all compost in the hole and turn it biweekly. Didn't cut any leaves. I just watch for frost very carefully.

I created this pvc contraption because I noticed the flower was causing the actual tree to lean the same direction as the flower. So to prevent a disaster I made this.

Quick help. Have noticed today ants all over the baby nanners. How to stop this? We are using a mosquito net to keep out wasps and birds. Every few days we can open the bottom of the net which is taped around the white support post to remove fallen petals etc. It's very breathable. And we tape on the top of the mosquito net around the flower step so ants can't get in.

Yes it's normal! Ants love the sweet sweet nectar! Take your finger and dip it around a fresh flower! Taste! It tastes great! Here I see lots of fire ants and other bees and wasps. But the paper wasps! I can't stand them! They come from miles around to see my flowers and chase me lol. It seems like it anway.

They won't do any harm that I know of. The little bananas are about the same taste as the leaves or pstem right now! They are only after the flower nectar!!

I'm soooo glad I have the mosquito sack over the bananas. The outside of the sack is loaded with ants hahahaha. My wife has some type of human/pet/plant harmless ant/bug spray that kills insects. I may spray that on them tomorrow. I just naturally do not like ants at all. LoL

Now that it is the middle of the day and a lot of ants are not out due to the direct heat and sun, we decided to pull back the mosquito sack.

We have 60 bananas at the moment. How long before you cut off the flower?

I like to wait till it gets about a foot below the last female hand. I also like to snap it off with my hand vs cutting it. It works way better. The best part of the entire banana flowering process is when you snap the flower off and throw it across the field with a perfect spiral like it's a football! Very satisfying!

Those flower buds are eatable. Use the petals as table accents or inter tender petals in salads or stir fry. If you have Asian markets around, you might be able to sell the fresh buds.

Can you expand on what the "last female hand" is please?

Female hand is hand of bananas. You will see tiny male flowers being made. Counting from the last actual banana!

Sorry I could have just as easily said (the last hand of actual bananas)

The end of this lovely journey is closing to an end. When does others recommend to cut the flower off? I snapped this photo this evening, about 30 minutes ago.

And here is the 20 lb banana harvest on 28th of October. My mom enjoy them my children's Taekwondo instructor enjoyed them and we sure did enjoy them ourselves. will definitely be doing this again next year hopefully. They ripened this week of November and were tremendously delicious.

From flag leaf to harvest was 3 months and 11 days in Southern Kentucky. To ripen took about 10 days on the window seal indoors.

What a great success story. Congratulations.
You are a brave person to hang a banana bunch on a white door 😀. I would be scared of irreversible stains and a paint job.
