I have had a white bird of paradise in a pot that was rather large. Last fall I wanted to try and experiment and cut it all the way down to the root ball. I then put the root in a box for the winter. This spring I planted it and in earlier this month it has sprouted. My question is can this plant survive my winters? I am in zone 6a. I assume I could be 6b because I am inside the city of Indianapolis. I assume if the plant is hardy I could treat how I winterize my Musa Basjoos and Kannas with mulch? As for cutting the plant down was no real loss. I liked it a lot but it was too big and I don't have enough sunlight in my house to keep it happy. Plus I can always get another at Lowes, Home Depot or Menards. Thanks for any suggestions.

It will not survive zone 6. I have one in ground here in zone 9b and I almost lost it 2 winters ago. Even now I grow it within 2ft of my house to give it some extra winter heat.

Thank you for very helpful advice. I'm thinking I will dig it up in October and repot it. The plant is at and will be at a manageable size. It was way too big and freaking heavy.

No problem, they are beautiful tropical looking plants. And it will look great with a little winter TLC.
