What is the maximum height for a pup you would cut free from a corm/mat to transplant? I have an ice cream (more likely a Namwah) that has two fairly tall trunks (about 13 ft. and 11 ft., respectively), surrounded by seven pups. The tallest is 5-6 ft; the smallest is about 3 1/2 feet. I would like to cut a couple of the pups off the mat and transplant them elsewhere in our garden. Do you think it's safe to do that without harming the two largest plants and hamper their fruiting potential?

I transplanted about 7 pups this year of which many were only an inch tall, they had massive root systems and are growing well. Several were ice creams, two double mahoi, a darjeeling giant, a misi luki, and a mona lisa. I think the tallest one was 9". The key is to have a good root system under the pup. I had a couple where the roots were over a foot long, but the pup above was only an inch.

Thanks, Lancelot--I seem to have the opposite situation. I followed the instructions on the main banana forum page and the first pup I separated had plenty of corm under it but almost no roots. I'm thinking it probably wasn't a "sword sucker," but since it was six feet tall I didn't think it would be a weakling!

The second one was shorter--about 4 feet--but had more roots. I have planted both elsewhere in the garden and am keeping fingers crossed.

At least there are more pups if I have to try again!

Just in case you need a visual ...there are many Youtube videos on different techniques to separate pups. You might pick up a few pointers from them for next time you do a seperation.

Just pick and chose what you might need.
