Hi guys for the past 9 years I have lived in Lehigh acres Fl. and I have been trying to grow my own bananas, by trying I mean I bought some plants and planed them, I keep them watered and cleaned up. I/E/ removed the dead parts. But I must say in all the years I have had them I have never seen a banana outside of the public’s. I have three main patches of plants with a total of 7 or so plants. They all seem healthy good leafs & color. I have asked at the home depot as well as at a local nursery but I can not seem to find any good info. I don’t want to just through money at this and hope for the best. If I can get some good results (a banana). I would like to add more plants as I think they look nice and I have the room.
Thanks guys!
Tony

Oh gee, must be an echo in here tonight.

We need pictures of your plants and the types of banana you bought. Not all bananas plants fruit, so have you ever seen any type of flower on the plants? Within 2 to 3 years of planting you should have seen something.

Remove the grass around, dig it out, and put fresh soil and leaf mold. Heavy thick natural mulch.

It should. The grass is gobling up all the banana food and starving it and stunting it. Bananas can be very hungry and thirsty. They just look stunted and hungry to me.

where did you get the plants and what type/variety were they?

The middle photo appears to show a mature plant that is about 3 to 4 ft tall. Is that correct. From the thick pstem, and tight stack I think it to be a dwarf of some type.

The other smaller plants appear to be young pups which could be stunted as mentioned. However, there is not enough info to determine if these are ornamental or fruiting desert bananas.

Even if these were left alone, you should have seen some type of flower and attempt of fruiting over 9 years. So I suggest getting nanas for zone 10 Fla, Namwah, Orinoco, or other type to replant.

I have no idea what type of plats they are, they are all obout 9 years old.
what would be a good fertilizer to use how much and how often?
Sorry if that is a dumb question. I like my palnts and want them to do well. I never had the time to work on them before.
Thank you

There are many different opinions of the forum about fertilizing. So see fertilizer in the forum wiki at the top of the page for basic information. ... However, since I think you have a non-fruiting ornamental, I would apply 3/4 to 1 cup of a general purpose fertilizer (10-10-10; or 8-8-8) once a month during the growing season. And apply a thick layer of mulch around the plant base to kill the grass. ... The plants are doing very well and looks good as they are.

Make sure the mulch is spreading six feet away from the bananas. Bananas and coconuts don't like grass anywhere near them.
