Came across this interesting musa on ebay and wondered if anyone else could tell me more about it. Since it is advertised as "Musa helconia" will it produce bananas or just flowers?
It sure resembles Aeae in coloration and would be nice to have in the garden. Also, can something like this be crossed with a Musa banana to create a hybrid that bears fruit?
Here is the link: Musa Heliconia Variegated - eBay (item 190226922561 end time Jun-12-08 14:21:10 PDT) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190226922561&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009)

Thanks!

Looks like a variegated helocinia Psittacorum. I don't believe it's a banana.

Definitely a Heliconia. They either used that name Musa to attract views (since variegated Musa are so popular) or were referencing a very old taxonomic guide where Heliconia was considered part of the Musaceae and erroneously paralleled it with being a Musa. I bet it was the former case though.

I've got this plant thanks to Brent (bananaman88) and it is identical to the eBay picture. The bloom is supposedly orange although mine hasn't bloomed yet.

Thanks so much for clearing that up for me. Hey Steve or Brent, if you have any extra root cuttings available, it IS a beautiful plant that I would like to grow. Let me know. No rush, just whenever. Thanks!
