*UPDATE* January 2, 2019
Of the three trees (Two Hirt's seedlings and the one KSU Atwood that I planted in Spring 2016) two trees have flower buds that have developed throughout the 2018 growing season. Mainly one tree which is my largest seedling tree (over 6ft tall but averaging around 5-6) with NC-1 grafted onto a bottom branch and Sunflower that I grafted onto a midway branch in Spring 2018. Overall this tree has like 40+ flower buds. It actually bloomed in early Fall and it was amazing to see my first flower developing - it did fall off though. The other smaller seedling has like 4 flower buds but it is a small seedling tree with very few lateral branches and height (around 3-4 ft). The KSU Atwood has reached 6ft tall at it's tallest point but has no flower buds at all. I think in 2019 this tree will develop at least a few or many flower buds. I did plant 5 trees last year. Two are KSU Chappell which one grew almost 4 feet which is crazy to me since the first year I planted my trees in 2016 they only grew like 5-8 inch shoots at most. The other trees I planted were Chappell, Overleese, Potomac and Shenandoah. Plus I have seedlings I directly sowed in the ground in 2017. Overall my trees are all doing well and I am very excited to try cross pollinating the flower buds on the largest seedling. The tree has flower buds that have developed on the seedling portion, the NC-1 graft and even 1 flower bud on the Sunflower graft. Very excited and impressed with how quickly the Hirt's seedling has grown and developed flower buds - especially the willingness to attempt flowering in Fall. Hope everyone is doing well and happy new year! Share anything you can :) Here is a link to my Youtube channel that has video diaries of the growth of my trees:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzVtXhUlUzfWylM83q20s2g
Just keeping a record to see how long the tree takes to flower & fruit. Thank you!
*Update* May 1st 2018
The trees are so much bigger this year than any other year so far.. they doubled in size from 2016 for sure.. one seedling tree has big nice leaves and strong growth - grew like a 35 inch shoot last year and developed some flower buds along the trunk.. didn't bloom this year but the flower buds remain on the trunk brown red color - this tree also has the NC-1 grafted on a lower branch and thats alive i see the leaf buds swelling so i'm happy it survived.. my other seedling looks good too - my graft failed last year so theres 3 main branches.. i have sunflower scionwood i'm going to try grafting onto this seedling this year. The KSU Atwood leaf buds are starting to swell and it looks ready to grow - not like last year when it was having nutrient and leaf trouble - I also planted my final pawpaw which is a KSU 4-1 pawpaw.. i setup a shade cloth for it.. it's a tiny stick like 8-9 inches long if that.. Everything seems okay so far!
*UPDATE* Aug. 22nd 2017
It seems that the KSU-Atwood grafted tree has been cured of its stunted growth in the beginning of the season. I'm not exactly sure what was causing the issues for the little tree - it could have been a bit of transplant shock as well as the need for fertilizer - I did give the tree Jobes Organic Acid Loving Formula as well as worm castings and then seaweed & fish fertilizer throughout the season. I stopped with all of the seaweed and fish fertilizer the end of June though. I did this to all three of my trees so ensure they would grow well and they really did! I always try to give a lot of water but I also don't want to drown the trees so I try to be careful with giving too much water. All of the trees grew around 12-29 inch shoots. The KSU-Atwood grew shoots around 12-18 inches. My other seedling grew the largest and longest shoots ranging from 16-31 inches. The last seedling grew about 20-22 inch shoots. It was a successful growing season for the pawpaws. I'm looking forward to their growth next year! I also purchased a KSU 4-1 Pawpaw which I will plant next spring.
Hello all :) I am currently growing three paw paw trees. Two of the paw paw trees are from Hirt's that I purchased last year (2016) and I also bought a KSU-Atwood paw paw from One Green World last year. This growing season the two paw paws from Hirts are growing quite vigorously and have already put out 3-5 inches of new shoots with leaves (6-7 inches as of today (June 1st 2017)). However, The KSU-Atwood is growing much slower.. the leaves look light green with a discolor on the back, are smaller, and look a little deformed.. not completey deformed but not full or uniform - they look kinda weak almost? And its not growing too much. I am trying to keep the soil moist but i'm wondering if it could be transplant shock still? Last year when I planted all of the paw paws even the ones from Hirt's seemed like they were shocked and establishing themselves because the leaves were small, light green and sort of small looking. However, this faded and the leaves enlarged and they were healthy looking. I'm just wondering whats going on this year with the KSU-Atwood because the other two paw paws next to this tree are flourishing and they are all in full sun (direct sun from 7-8am to 3:30-4pm. The trees are about 2 feet tall each. The KSU-Atwood paw paw may be only 16-18 inches tall. Im gonna try shading it from now on but I was curious if anyone else has any tips or experience with paw paws to know what could be going on? Any other growing tips or experiences I would love to hear. Thank you!

I find it awesome your growing a native Ohio fruit.
Locally in our parks there are a few still around and Ohio has a few annual Paw paw festivals
While I do not grow them I do know there is a wealth of information on the internet and there is even a paw paw club which sells plants.
My guess is your plant is still in transplant shock

Thank you! I am really fascinated with the paw paw tree. The history of this tree is so interesting and the fruit sounds delicious.. and the fact that it is fhe host tree for the zebra swallowtail butterfly.. it's like how could you not wanna grow this tree. Thank you for taking the time to read. I hope you're right about the transplant shock

I have grown a few dozen Pawpaw trees over the years. Their growth rate varies greatly according to their genetics.
The fruit is one of my favorite on the planet in the custard apple family. They don't fruit very heavily mostly because of lack of appropriate pollinators which are flies.
I have never seen anything like what you're describing going on with discolored leaves. Perhaps if you showed us a picture it might be helpful.
Good luck

These are the other two paw paws that are growing vigorously compared to the other one and they are greener with larger leaves. Just for comparison. They are all next to one another too.. spaced about 5-6 feet apart if that. sun from 7-8 am to around 3:30-4pm..

My paw paw trees had yellow leaves (but not as much) when the temperatures were cooler. Now that its been warmer, the leaves are much greener. There is just a hint of yellow on mine and the plants look to be similar in size to yours.
I read an article that said the small trees don't like direct sun. My trees are shaded by a big maple tree and my house for about 4 hours a day around noontime. You can try a shade cloth on the one plant, perhaps that type is more sensitive to sunlight when its younger....

I don't think that's a disease problem at all. It looks to me like some kind of chlorosis caused by a nutrient deficiency. I would hit it with some all-purpose fertilizer with trace minerals or some rotted manure or compost and keep it watered well.
I'm not a big fan of maple trees. They have a shallow root system and suck the life out of everything near them. True very young trees need some shade. I wouldn't use a tree to give them that shade though it will stunt their growth if there is competition in anyway from them. Once they're halfway mature, and it looks like yours are in good shape, they do better in full sun.
I have done all mine from seed. I enjoy starting things from seed, and I have had some success and some failure. I am told that they turn out true to form from seed.
If you would like to try seed I would recommend looking up the website of the University of Kentucky. Several years ago they were very kind and send me an envelope full of seed from there select trees in the orchard.
These trees have a habit of suckering and I let them do it. Sometimes a good sucker will produce better than the mother tree
Good luck

Thank you for answering. I did put jobes organic all purpose fertilizer 2 weeks ago and I put some jobes acid loving plants fertilizer around the tree and scraped into soil.. I'll put more before it rains tomorrow.. I also put worm castings around the trees today and put a shade cloth around the tree.. I have little cages around them already for dogs to stay out but I wrapped a scarf around the cage overhead and secured at the sides so it sits over but allows air like a tunnel almost.. hopefully this helps? I also plan to put more fertilizer down but a better amount this time! Thank you for the tips !! Appreciate it very much. I also bought seeds from peaceful heritage.. got 14 seeds from a ripe susquehanna.. supposed to make superior or at least excellent fruit because the genetics are from susquehanna fruit so I'm very excited.. but I got a ksu Atwood which is the tree that I'm trying to preserve and that one is supposed to have excellent fruit.. I also tried grafting nc-1 and overleese onto my other two paw paw tree's in full sun.. so far the grafts have taken.. very excited !

Your trees are beautiful ! Thank you for showing me pictures and helping me! I put a shade clothe over the plant immediately.. hopefully my trees will have nice leaves like your trees someday ! I'll also try adding more fertilizer and organic matter like worm castings and nitrogen rich mulch.. thank you again!

Thank you!
Hopefully your tree will fix itself once summer arrives. One of my trees was much slower to grow than the others. I have susquehanna, shenandoah, and one seedling tree.
My lot is small so I had to find a compromise location to plant my trees. The maple tree is on my neighbor's side so not much I can do about it.
Good luck!

That's awesome those are supposed to be two of the best paw paw cultivars.. how old are your trees? They look like they have a year or two of growth more than mine. I only planted these trees last year.. the two from hirts were like 14-16 inches if that? & the ksu Atwood from onegreenworld was like 12 inches tall.. very small to start but I am patient I figure they will be in shock for a few seasons.. the ksu Atwood seems very slow and more shocked than the other two.. I even tried grafting onto the other two pawpaws with vigorous growth and the grafts look like they have taken.. so the grafts will be overleese and nc-1 if they live.. I'm excited! thanks again for sharing

Very cool. I've never grafted but I am planning to try it sometime soon. Either with pears or paw paws or figs. When I get some cuttings that are grafting size, perhaps we can talk....
I received the paw paws as dormant plants in the fall of 2015 and kept them inside the first winter. Then, I planted my trees in the ground last spring. They were only about a foot tall when I got them as well. I covered them with burlap and leaves this past winter just for extra insurance. I just started with fertilizer treatment this year.
Looks like we will be in a holding pattern for several years till we get any fruit.

I got paw paw scion wood from kentucky state university.. go to their facebook page. Their name on facebook is ksu pawpaw.. send them a message asking them what pawpaw cultivar scionwood do you have left. They sent me 2-3 twigs from overleese, nc-1 and sunflower. They had many others and they send them for free! Just a heads up so you know. And sounds good you're a year ahead of me. Looking forward to seeing how the trees grow! Send me updates if u wanna i'd love to hear about anything you learn or notice

So I just wanted to post a little update for some people who may have experienced this problem at all.. what I did was put worm castings onto the soil and worked that in.. put down more jobes organic natural acid loving fertilizer and then watered well with the entire bottle of maxi crop seaweed diluted in water and saturated the soil around the tree really well.. then I put a shade cloth over the tree.. I removed the cloth while it is rainy and cloudy for now but when the sun comes back out I will put the shade cloth back over the tree.. Here is the progress so far.. the tree seems to be in better shape now than before.. still growing slowly but at least the leaves are turning a darker green where the new ones are emerging.. I guess it was a nutrient deficiency with too much direct sunlight? https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/18920951_1900866850182948_8876608894290197904_o.jpg?oh=59fb7924a 71d2d1d348049668f81b088&oe=59E9D769

Hi Eric
It is a nutrient deficiency. It looks like an iron or magnesium deficiency. Putting the fertilizer for acid loving plants is the right answer. My pawpaw exhibit the same problem if I don't stay on top of the fertizing. The soil is pretty alkaline in the Dallas area.

Thank you very much for commenting on this. I still have a lot more fertilizer. It was almost two weeks ago that i put down fertilizer. Do you think it will hurt if i put down more for this tiny tree ? I also purchased seaweed and fish fertilizer. I don't wanna give the plant too much of a good thing but i don't intend to lose this tree. Is it okay to fertilize again two weeks later ?

I would follow the directions on the fertilizer bag. Generally you can fertilizer on a monthly basis. Seaweed and fish emulsion can be used weekly if diluted to 1/2 strength.

Okay i'll do that. I put some some more fertilizer and used the seaweed and fish liquid. I just wanna pump this little guy up as much as I can. Now i'll just keep it well watered and use a shade cloth when it's sunny. Thanks again !

Hey, people! I just wanted to post some update pictures of the Pawpaw tree that had been struggling.. I removed the shade cloth to see how the tree would do in full sun.. so far the tree is doing very well! The shoots that were growing slowly sped up and are now 4-6 inches of new growth! I used the organic jobes acid loving formula.. that was like 3-4 weeks ago though.. mainly I used for the past 4 weeks every week I put seaweed and fish fertilizer down on the tree and I always water it really well.. try to keep the soil moist.. I just wanted to post this update because there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information on Pawpaws so any way this could help someone with their own pawpaws I hope it does.. I guess the main problem was that the tree needed fertilizer and the soil needed to be enriched and the ph needed to be closer to acidic soil.. Wish you guys luck with whatever you're growing!

Paw Paw- The Strongest Anti-Cancer Plant?
As if those arent enough, Paw Paw bark may be of the strongest anti-cancer substances out there, sharing similar traits to the now-famous, exotic South American Graviola tree leaves and twigs (the tree that produces the Soursop fruit). In fact, a large-scale Purdue University study found that it had the strongest anti-cancer abilities of any such fruit/plant on the North and South American continents, even more than soursop/graviola in vitro.
Two studies published in 1997 by a Purdue University researcher Dr. Jerry McLaughlin, who has published more than 330 scientific papers and secured several patents for his work, and a doctoral student, and found that compounds in the bark of the tree showed preliminary success in fighting against drug-resistant cancers.
The Paw Paw compounds are not only effective in killing tumors that have proven resistant to anti-cancer agents, but they also seem to have a special affinity for such resistant cells, an article on the Purdue News website noted.
Over 40 anti-cancer compounds were found in Paw Paw bark, although McLaughlin noted that cancer cells are very complex and difficult to kill in humans. A follow-up study was undertaken, but not enough has been done as of yet to determine the ultimate effects in humans.

Over 40 anti-cancer compounds were found in Paw Paw bark, although McLaughlin noted that cancer cells are very complex and difficult to kill in humans. A follow-up study was undertaken, but not enough has been done as of yet to determine the ultimate effects in humans.

Thank you for posting this information and giving your input. There's a good book you may want to look into called "Your Fourth Choice" that explains how Pawpaw is used as an alternative cancer treatment. It was very interesting! It is very cool to think that Pawpaw, a Native American fruit tree that has been here for thousands of years provides us with nutrition and disease fighting but so many people have no clue what this fruit is.. thanks again for the info

I already have Sunflower, Prima 12 16 and Wabash, and will have Overleese, Mango, Susquehanna, Sibley, Halvin, Tollgate, and Belle.
Very nice ! Are they all producing fruit? Have you ever seen cracking of the graft on your paw paw trees? I purchased ksu Atwood pawpaw and I noticed this year that the base of the tree the baby trunk where the tree was grafted onto the other seedling.. there is a crack that started to emerge and the wood is peeling back leaving a dark brown exposed area. It looks as though the tree is sealing off the wood and healing but I was concerned that the tree was stressed and that the trunk was cracking.. I didn't know what it was.. apparently this is normal at the graft union or that is what I was told by ksu pawpaw research Facebook page.. the tree is growing well despite the initial start in the season where it was looking sick but now that I saw that cracking trunk I was like "What the hell is this?!" lol

I really hope you get your first Pawpaw crop next year.. this tree and the fruit sound almost too good to be true.. waiting for that crop feels like forever.. I only planted the 3 trees I have now last year lol. I also planted Susquehanna pawpaw seeds from peaceful heritage this year in may and now I am starting to see 3 of the 10 seeds I planted coming up.. very exciting lol.. You have a lot of good cultivars! How long have you had your trees? Any growing advice?

I'm very very enthusiastic about this fruit tree and the variability on flavour regarding this fruit. I'm shure that leaves and bark will be used on industry to make insecticids and anti-cancer drugs. Another thing i see that will expand is the comercialization of freezed pulp, ice cream, jams, alcoolic beverages like paw paw beer... The possibilities of this tree is amazing!

Hey Eric,
Congrats your paw paws are great. Mine have been pushing along as well but the japanese beetles have been mowing them pretty hard. I mist them with neem oil every few days to keep them away.
Luis,
How tall was your paw paw when it first flowered? Mine are over half a meter tall (2').
Thanks,

Thank you for your reply! Yes i know it's big and it's a peterson's paw paw so it must be good. Another very big paw paw variety is mammoth, but i think there are no trees of it here in Europe.

The only cultivar I have is KSU-ATWOOD.. the two other pawpaws I got were from amazon from Hirt's garden.. one of the two hirt's pawpaws has really strong growth and big and beautiful leaves so I'm really hoping the fruit is excellent.. I also planted seeds from Susquehanna pawpaw seeds from peaceful heritage.. so someday when those trees are larger and fruit the fruit should be excellent too.. the rootstock question - If you had a specific tree that had excellent growth like 16-24 inches of growth in a season that would be a great cultivar to graft onto because it will grow quicker.. I think also having rootstock that is adapted to the zone and region you are from is helpful because it assures the tree will be able to adapt and thrive wherever you are.. Plus the rootstock may sucker some day and that will be a new variety if it ever flowers and makes fruits from the graft on the original rootstock..:woohoonaner:

Hello my friend. This was an expensive tree, but peterson's pawpaw trees are the most expensive and this seller is the only person that sells potomac in Europe. It was 85 euros. The tree is one meter tall. I will have 14 varieties untill the end of the year, but in this moment i have 2 big sunflower trees, 1 prima, 1 wabash and 1 potomac. I will have soon Overleese, Mango, Susquehanna, Shenandoah, Sibley, Halvin, Tollgate, Greenriver Belle and Lynns Favoritte. :08:

Wow! You have a lot of the best cultivars of pawpaws in the world. You must have a lot of space for them. I want to get one of Peterson's pawpaws but I'm not sure which one I want. I also really want overleese too. I'm gonna try grafting overleese onto one of my seedling trees next year. KSU sends scionwood for free so that's really helpful.

In a pot? I think it might freeze and the roots will stay frozen for too long. My suggestion is to put the pot in the ground (bury the pot) or keep inside.
Last year, I kept my paw paws in the ground. THe trees were wrapped with burlap and covered with leaves. It may have been extreme but I wanted no losses since they were small. This year, I don't be covering them at all since they are much bigger now.

Thanks ! I'm gonna go with burying the tree pot in the ground and then covering the base of it with lots of leaves once they fall. Thanks again!! How many inches do your pawpaws usually grow? My pawpaws grew really well this year.. one of my seedling trees grew a shoot that is 29 inches I think.. they only grew like 6-8 inches if that.. the ksu Atwood made shoots like 12-18 inches each and then the other seedling like 16-22 inch shoots.. I was surprised by the one seedling tree that made a 29 inch shoot.

Wow 29 inches is impressive. Of my 3 plants, 2 of them have grown about 2' this summer. The remaining tree only did about 6 inches and then stopped growth in July. The tree looks healthy and has most of its leaves. Not sure why it stopped since the conditions of all 3 are similar. Based on what others are saying, it may take 2 more years to see fruits....

Wow 2 feet is a lot too though! Do you fertilize a lot? I wonder if the trees have like growing seasons where they don't grow much but the roots grow more and that's why they don't make as much vegetative growth? Do you have cultivars or seedlings? I think Peterson said that once they get to about shoulder height they can start producing flowers and fruiting lol but I guess that's hard to determine if you're like 6'5 or 5'1 lol. It seems like most people from what I've seen on youtube or just seen in discussions that it takes like 5 years for the first fruit from a little seedling tree.. from seed I have no clue lol probably takes like 8 years.

I have been growing pawpaws for years, both grafted and from seed. I graft my own now. I think your trees look fine. I am guessing that the trees were potted when you got them. What happens is that the soil in the pot becomes deficient and when you plant them in the ground and the roots start growing into the soil the problem will correct itself. All of the trees are plenty large enough to take full sun and the trees will fruit much better with full sun. But when they leaf out in the shade they tend to burn with sun on the shade grown leaves. I love pawpaw trees and I love the fruit. Many of mine are small but I have about 30 different varieties.

Thank you! It seems that the tree has corrected itself. It grew really well and has a nice full shape emerging. They've only been in the ground since last year and they were just 12-18 inch sticks last year. This year they put on some serious growth. I can see the start of their main shapes beginning - like the main stem and then lateral branches - very vigorous growth this year compared to last year! How much water do pawpaws usually need? I know they say they like a lot of water but it's like how often do you water your varieties and what have you noticed about what works?

I love how you have so many kinds of trees. I don't have any of Peterson's but they seem so good.. maybe some day I'll buy one of his trees. Do you think seeds from his fruit trees would be good? I bought susquehanna pawpaw seeds and they are growing they are tiny sprouts this year like 4 inches tall.. Wow! Your trees got big! That's so cool to see flowers. This is the start of your 4th growing season with the pawpaws right? They really got big last year huh. I hear you about the cold my pawpaws are just starting to swell in their leaf buds a little.

Hi! Cz. Rep. is the Pawpaw kingdom in Europe. They already grow a lot of very rare varieties like Halvin and Maria's Joy!

Yes it's very interesting! A way to learn how they develop.

Hi all,
Summer is in full swing and I have 10 fruits forming on my tree. The tree is now over 5' tall and looks very healthy. I have had to spay for japanese beetles but otherwise all has been good.

What do you spray your trees with to keep Japanese beetles away? I barely noticed Japanese beetles but now that the trees are getting bigger I have seen them on my trees munching the leaves down! They haven't completely destroyed my tree but one of my seedlings has been getting eaten up by them.

Thanks. Those are Shenandoah fruits. I also have a susquehanna tree but that one only flowered and didn't fruit.
In the morning, I spray diluted neem oil on my paw paw tree leaves. I do this after attacks begin to occur. I even had a few june bugs this year. The neem oil works fairly well but you have to spray every few days since it washes off with rain and moisture. I also have a bayer brand vegetable and garden insect spray that works even better. I save that for when serious killing power is needed!
Just don't spray in the middle of the day since moisture drops might burn leaves if a bright sun is shining.

That one on the left is huge!
Has it flowered? Since sunflower is self fertile (I think), it should fruit without a second plant.

Thank you for these messages and for contributing to this forum. I put an update on the first message I wrote for this group but my biggest tree has flower buds on the seedling portion and flower buds on the NC-1 graft that I did back in 2017. The tree even flowered in Early Fall and then the flower fell off - it was so cool to see though. Very excited to try cross-pollinating.

What is the spacing between these two trees? Just curious :) - I spaced my trees 6-7 feet from one another so they would become a hedge and pollinate each other well hopefully.

I think they are spaced 2 meters more or less...

Oh okay so it's around the same as my trees. Once I looked into it more I saw that Kentucky State University & Neal Peterson recommends 8 feet between trees. I think Michael Judd said that ideally 10 ft is even better. They can become a decent sized tree if you just let them grow without pruning and stuff. Oh well - I figured 6-7 feet for pollination and to make a privacy wall someday. I think I would try to prune them so they don't get too high in the sky. Harvesting fruit would be difficult if they get like 20+ ft tall. They say pawpaws like to be planted together anyway since they make a patch anyways but then I read that people said they shade themselves out and then won't make as much fruit or the shaded branches will eventually die back. Who knows lol. Your trees look great though! Definitely a medium-larger tree now.

I havent posted in here in awhile. I actually got 8 pawpaw fruits last year from my seedling tree. Cluster of 8 from 1 flower. (Very happy). The fruits were around 5-6 percent seed, firm texture with a fruity, pineapple flavor. The trees are around 5-8 ft tall and branching out nicely. Much larger than 2016. All of the flowers on Atwood died from a frost BUT one survived and theres a single fruit for this year 2020. Im really excited to try Atwood! Between 3 trees I have about 10-13 fruits developing. Im looking forward to harvest this year.

The only pawpaw that Ive heard of being self-fertile is Sunflower but I would say buy at least 2-6 because it will help increase fruit and if one dies unexpectedly youll have a backup. I lost a tree this year to ambrosia beetle which really hurt but it is what it is. My other trees appear to be fine so who knows.

I can say that sunflower is self-fertile. But it's allways better to have more than one variety.
