I was intrigued by the tread [rookie needing a coach! southern cali zone 10a by LoveR]. to buy tc's you already sure your may not get exactly what you ordered and then to definitely not know what your going to get. sounds like more fun than slashing peoples tires in the middle of a hot day! so I bought some. so for your entertainment and mine I bought 6. :lurk: 30 dollars and shipping was 3.25, ordered on Friday and got them today, Thursday. was hoping for 6 different varieties, but I received 2 namwa, 2 dc and 2 iholena. http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=61591&size=1 http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=61592&size=1 instructions http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=61590&size=1 bananas.org was not on the instruction sheet. don't know how it got there.

the Banana.org logo is the forum watermark for picture stored in the forum picture gallery.

I just tried to look at baker creek website and their bananas, all I found was the pink banana. Other banana links kept redirecting to their Homepage. ??? Keep us posted on how those work for you.

I think Beam bought the last of their stock. The link I put in that thread redirects to the homepage and the dwarf bundle isn't showing in the search results.

probably when that thread came out the I want a cheap nanna for my porch people spurred a lot of orders. nearly as soon as I saw it I ordered basically looking at the iholena. so I ordered fairly quickly. :bananas_b

.... Ditto .... using their search, the only banana showing is the
Pink Banana (Musa velutina).

Someone did the groundwork on this iholena earlier this year. I also e-mailed the tc lab, and they confirmed the story but wouldnt give me any info on who their initial collector in Hawaii was or how they obtained the material. Is there rules on moving banana material out of Hawaii? Id guess they can do more if people want them.

pic of them in pots. all of them are leaning. the front 2 are iholena [I really think they are iholeaners a close cousin to the ohioleaners in some of the pics from cincinnana :ha:] the 2 on the right in the back are dc and on the left are namwa. http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=61596&size=1

That was me! I also found this picture and the following quote:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/forest-and-kim/14838313120
"First Bunch - 'Maia Iholena' - Dwarf Hawaiian Banana

'Maia Iholena', a dwarf Iholena type Hawaiian banana, is one of the rarest bananas in the world. We got this banana from a cultivated patch that was originally from wild stock in Iao Valley, Maui.

It took 17 months from planting until this first bud. Another 75 or so days and we'll get to taste this rare treat."

Any updates on these dwarf iholena? I'm curious how they are growing and what they look like? Any new pictures would be awesome!

After recently tasting Tigua fruit which were amazing! For sure a keeper!

I'm looking for a pup off one of these dwarf iholena! If you have one please PM I would be willing to pay or do a free trade! I have lots of pups just tell me what your looking for.

I currently have red iholena and Tigua. I'm looking for any other iholena pups! If they taste like Tigua you will not be desipointed!

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I've been busy. Our water well went out as I was coming home from our bananas on the coast day before yesterday and I had a VA appt yesterday. In this heat the bananas at home won't be happy if I don't get the well back on quickly! I've got the well pulled out, now to just replace the pump and motor and get it back in the hole.

Sad to say, the "Dwarf Iholena" from Baker Creek is growing s-l-o-w-l-y in contrast to the Tigua. Tigua seems to be very fast! On the bright side, my FHIA-21 plantain finally started pupping. It went from nothing to pupping like crazy! So I have one that I dug and potted if you want it.

Since that "Dwarf Iholena" is the only one I have, I'm waiting for it to pup before I send you one. Maybe when I get the water back on I can make it hurry up! Then maybe I could send both at the same time. I'd like a Highgate and that SH3640 that you promised earlier. Remember? :)

Sorry! I know your busy! I wasn't trying to rush you. I was asking the whole forum for updates! I was just curious how these were doing for anyone that has them! Posting for the whole forum!

I was able to confirm Agristarts is producing these! So good chance it's the real deal! They also added 2 more Musa varieties this year! One is a Polynesian plantain! Other is a red ornamental. Should be pretty awesome also! I just hope they end up being good producers!

my tissue cultures from bakers creek are doing pretty well though my dwarf green is growing very slowly. The dwarf Orinoco, dwarf namwah, dwarf cavendish have grown like weeds and are about 3 feet tall. Bananas grow fast.

Hopefully Agristarts doesn't get them mixed up like all the others

Baker Creek is notorious for outrageous claims to attract novice plant growers. In my opinion you should boycott the site.

lost one of the namwah. only one of the non variegated tc's I have purchased that has died soo all is good. the front 2 are the dc's, the back right is the namwa just put out a leaf and the 2 back left are the iholene. lost some of the old leafs but the all are putting out new leafs. if you look at the first set of pics they were packaged very wet some of the leafs were already yellowing and I lost more shortly after potting. still growing s...l...o...w but are picking up the pace.

My only complaint with Baker Creek is that you don't know what you are going to get. But maybe that's like Mr. Gump says about a box of chocolates! :) They helped me to quickly build up the types of bananas I have without spending a lot of money. The Dw. Orinoco I got from them is making bananas right now at home (8B)! 1,000 fingers I got from them is at our place in Sargent Tx 9B and is looking very good.

It's okay if you just want to call your plants Banana Plants. I purchased lots of cheap plants from Florida Hills. Great price but not what I ordered. You will really not know what Type of Banana Plant you have received until it blooms which for my plants has taken years. I have a Not Praying Hands, a Not Red Kru, Not Sumatrana X Gran Nain, and a lot of other Banana Plants that haven't bloomed.

Good Luck Susan

glad your nanners are doing good, this is a wonderful sight isn't it? you know baker creek is not the place to buy from if your one of the older or more experienced members with target bananas. and lets face it tc's from most other places in themselves are a gamble but for people with a moderate or low income and maybe no experience it is a good purchase. or for a person with a lot of property to plant and a newer member [I would fit that description], a role of the dice is a lot of fun. I have 30 in the ground am planting today more coming in and it is just starting to look like what I want. probably another 20 to 30 plants should round me out. and I own another place just like it. and being retired with a lot of time it is a no brainer I am having a BLAST. the iholenas were what I was interested in and they are probably not what I got, but if they are where in 7734 can you get one at that price. :08: the iholenes are pricy and availability is limited as with other varieties.

yes at the price of 10 to 15 dollars a corm tc's are probably and are a poor investment, especially for you older members. but for people with tight income and limited experience and more than likely no idea what they would want, tc's they can be beneficial. and corms are really fun to watch grow but one from a seed or a tc are lots of fun to.

I'm hoping the dwarf iholena are correct! Pictures are looking very promising. If not 100% it's a simular type! Y'all may have gotten lucky on this one. After tasting Tigua, I'm trying to round up every iholena I can find! Haha. Please keep updating this post with your dwarf iholena pics!

I figured to update this. my namwas are fast growers but the iholeneres a growing faster than the namwa. namwa is in the front. they look almost the same but the iholenas have leaves that come more to a point, less rounded.
