This plant is overmarketed by eBay sellers and the like -- only because a decade ago a seller started making false claims about its taste and performance in the Continental U.S. Don't fall for it.

You do not like the taste? What is bad about them?

Richard is probably referring to the Veinte Cohol trials done by Dr. Greg Fonsah from the University of Georgia. The trials are posted somewhere on the org but it is quicker to Google it.

It is interesting that Richard brought up "making false claims"...

There are about a dozen cultivars that will produce 150 lbs (gross) of fruit per inflorescence in a sub-tropical or near-tropical environment

Who are you quoting? I hope it's not me. I could come up with a half-dozen.

OK, whatever....

come up with a dozen

come up with a half-dozen

come up with one

Just do it.

While I do not have any available, I highly recommend Viente Cohol. I have grown Viente Cohol in Texas zones 8b and 9a for quite a few years now. I find them to be delicious, easy to grow and easy to fruit. The plant flowers more easily and ripens much more quickly than any other seedless banana that I have grown.

It fruits easily in a large pot, or in the ground, in a single season. I recommend removing most of the suckers, in order to encourage the intended fruiting pseudostem to grow as rapidly as possible.

I have no comment on productivity other than to say that every bunch I have harvested produced enough fruit that I had a hard time eating them before they were overripe. I think this makes them ideal for the home gardener.

The only downside I have found is their cold sensitivity. Once temperatures drop below around 55-60 degree Fahrenheit at night, the plant mostly stops growing. This means it will probably not be terribly useful in much of the country, without a greenhouse or similar accommodation. I also suspect that Viente Cohol would not perform as well in areas with cold winter soil conditions, since their heat loving metabolism probably makes them more susceptible to rot in cold, wet soils.

Having said that, my plants mostly top-killed this winter at around 22 degree Fahrenheit, with no protection. The small suckers have quickly grown back, and should have no problem fruiting this year. The soil was moist all winter, and it did no harm to the plants. While this does somewhat surprise me, I would say that Viente Cohol looks as good or better right now than any of the 20 or so banana varieties that I have.

They are not a "sweet" banana compared to other common sweet bananas. They have a tart citrus like different type taste. I love how they taste but I've met others who don't.

They are a short cycle banana in zones 8-9. In south Florida I would pick much better varities before VC. Above zone 8 they are very hard to fruit and grow due to them being extremely cold sensitive.

I have not yet tasted VC. Are they more tart than Manzano? I am not a huge fan of Manzano as they are too tart for my taste, but Mysore were also tart, but less so and sweeter.
Richard, I find it amazing that Mysore could produce a 150 lb bunch here in central Florida, as they are such small fruits... I would love to see that in my backyard this year... It is sure growing strongly after being torn up by a rotten varmint. The varmint isn't doing so well so far as I know...
I don't think lady finger is an actual cultivar.

VC is tart but not like manzano. I don't like manzano very much either. Manzano is very sweet with tartness but go mushy fast!. I know people who love manzano though. People's taste differ.

I really enjoy Veinte cohol! Just don't expect a sweet taste. It has some sweetness but not a lot. To me it's a bit citrus tasting. Texture is perfect to me until they get a little brown then they turn to pure mush! VC just has a very unique taste. It's hard to compare it to any other taste. I would say a neutral fresh taste. With some tart - not a lot. A mild sweetness and hints of citrus.

In my zone 8/9 it's a winner and a must have because it fruits so easy! If I was in your zone Jonifg I would pick many many varities over VC. You can grow some amazing sweet bananas down there that in my opinion taste way better than VC!

I really like them. I ate mine over ripe and very soft and look forward to having more. If your looking for banana flavor veinte is not the plant but I still enjoyed them. Just bought a Patupi and not had it long and it is growing way faster than veinte.

I received this photo today of a banana plant that I shipped to a Zone 5 member back in the middle of May 2017 and it flowered in September 2017 with 4 hands 61 fingers. It had a money back guarantee to flower in a few months, so that worked out nicely. :ha::ha::lurk:

These Veinte Cohol were great :08:
and these 30 pound racks have better fruit quality than the little 10 and 20 pound racks.

Top hand 27 fruit.

Only top mulch was used to feed the plant.

Shipped and you should have it on Monday.

Veinte Cohol fruit
Hydro Manini
Patupi
Red Super Plantain
& 2 Variegated Dwarf Namwa rhizomes.

Nice choices. Good luck, happy growing, & enjoy the fruit!!! :08:
