So, I am wondering as I have never had a "home grown" banana do they taste "different" than store bought ?; in a similar way a "home grown" tomato does ? i.e. much better ? regardless of variety.

I can only speak about the varieties I grow, but yes, definitely.
Each and every variety at its peak tastes so much better than a store bought. As a matter of fact, I rarely buy any bananas at the store anymore since I grow my own.
The emphasis is on "peak". A banana fruit that fills in and ripens during the summer months is a better banana than a banana that fills in slowly during the colder winter months.

I buy the store over-ripes (36 cents/lb) that still have a lot of yellow skin at a discount. These are sweeter. And, I put these in the frig. The skin will turn dark but the banana inside will last longer. .... I do freeze the bananas if I haven't eaten if they are starting to get soft. These I will cut up and eat frozen or use in shakes & cereal.

The full price store banana ( 69 cents/lb) still need to ripen before eating if you want a sweet banana. So why pay full price to just to let the banana ripen to the point a store sell it as 'over-ripe'?????
