View Full Version : -Help- Brown's Red

I purchased a Brown's Red corm from "The Banana Tree" online. I received it probably a week ago. It's since gone down hill, or at least it very much looks so. And the top inch or so of the pseudostem is lacking mass and is kind of mushy.
It is in a 1/2 top soil 1/2 perlite mix. I've watered it lightly maybe 3 or 4 times in the past week.

Anyway, here's a few pictures. Any help would be appreciated.

Exact same thing happened to me with a Musa sikkimensis from banana-tree. They are usually pretty good at replacing stuff if you ask them.

I wouldnʻt be so quick to call it dead, give it a few more weeks. Before it can grow any leaves, it needs to grow roots and this is what newly planted corms will be doing for (as Iʻve experienced, up to a few months in some situations) usually the first few weeks after planting. You can see there is still lots of living tissue above ground even, so donʻt worry, this is completely normal.

this happened to 4 of my ornatas. i took the pots outdside and left them alone and 3 of them came back. so gabe is correct, let them be for a while and see if they will suprise you.

Follow Gabe's advice and go light on the watering and I think you'll be OK.

Why go light on the water? If it's hot outside and sunny. Wouldn't a bunch of water do it good? Cold and Wet = Bad. Warm and Wet = Good. Right?

Not if it has no leafs or no visible growth, the plant has no way to deal with to much water. Its better to stay on the dryer side.

You might also want to carefully remove all of the dead tissue. I almost always remove dead tissue off of my new corms every few days and soon enough you'll end up having new growth! Sometimes it can take months though to get new growth from a new corm.

Nearly the whole pstem has turned dark, like it's dieing?

I just don't get it, I barely watered much at all. And it is in VERY well draining soil.

It looks like the pictures were taken indoors, is that where the plant has been growing? Did it have additional lighting? What is the temps where it's been growing? Cold moist soil with low light levels is a great breeding ground for rot!

It's being grown indoors, in the window. It's 72 or so in my house. I'd imagine warmer than that when the sun is shining.

Edit: Well, like I said the soil is very well draining. Not packed down or anything. I decided since the plant already looks dead I'd take a look at the roots. There's indeed new roots growing, but I noticed sort of a small swelling on the side of the bulb that wasn't there when I planted it. It's about the size of a marble, just below the soil level. I put it back in the soil, and lightly watered it. The soil is extremely dry, and I only watered it 2 days ago. I only give it like 1/2oz of water sprayed on the soil directly around the bulb each watering, to prevent the rest of the soil in the pot from being stagnant. I suppose I water it every 3-4 days now that everyone said I could be overwatering.

Be patient Novice - I had a plant that apparently died just like yours, until there was nothing visible above ground. But fortunately I left it alone and about 2 months later up popped a pup!!! The small swelling you describe is probably a pup on the way. Only you can judge how dry the soil is, but water when there is no growth to use it, is a bad thing (to use a technical term! lol!)

Good luck and hang in there, Cassie

It'll come back, hang in there. Before you know it, in a few years, you'll have so many of them and looking back at this thread will be amusing. They are really tough to kill. The bulge on the side, as mentioned already, is a new pup growing - called an "eye" now.

I'll admit it.. I kind of quit paying attention to the plant for a few days.

When I returned to check on it, I went ape****!

Unfortunetly, I didn't remove all the dead material before this growth began and the base leaf on the plant was dead down to the pstem when I did remove most of it. Question: Do I not have it planted deep enough?

It looks deep enough to me. Don't dig it up now unless you'll be putting it in the ground.

That pot is it's permanent home, lots of room to grow.

Sorry for not specifying. The one the in pot is my brown's red, which ironically I've seen no red out of. The other two are the pups from my mystery nana I found on craigslist, Just have them all outside together.. my manzano isn't far away, but just out of the picture. Check out my gallery for my the manzano pictures, just got it from xavierdlc61887.
